France is currently participating in Euro 2024 and has advanced to the quarterfinals primarily due to their strong defensive performance. Despite struggling to score goals in open play, they have managed to secure victories through a penalty by Kylian Mbappe and two own goals. The team has conceded only once throughout the tournament, showcasing their defensive strength and resilience.

Although France has not displayed their usual attacking flair, they have excelled defensively, with a joint-best defensive record alongside Spain. The centre-back duo of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano has been instrumental in France’s defensive solidity, even though they had not previously started a game together in a four-man defence. Coach Didier Deschamps praised the team’s defensive efforts, highlighting the importance of maintaining solid defensive performances at this level.

Forward Randal Kolo Muani emphasized the team’s defensive prowess, citing it as a key factor in their success. The defensive line, including players like Jules Kounde and Theo Hernandez, has been instrumental in thwarting opponents’ attacks. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan has also played a significant role, making crucial saves to ensure France’s defensive integrity. Former Lille and Roma coach Rudi Garcia praised Maignan as the best keeper of the tournament and commended the team for their defensive solidity.

France is set to face Portugal in the quarterfinals, a rematch of the Euro 2016 final where Portugal emerged victorious. Despite their struggles in front of goal, France’s defensive resilience and organization have been crucial in helping them advance in the competition. With a solid defensive foundation and a talented squad, the French team will look to continue their impressive defensive performances as they aim for success in Euro 2024.
