Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE National Rail Network, has recently signed a landmark agreement with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, to solarize its freight terminal in Ghuweifat. The agreement includes installing a 600 kWp ground-mounted solar PV system and a 2.56 MWh battery energy storage system, which is expected to generate up to 85% of the terminal’s electricity consumption. This initiative is part of Etihad Rail’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations and reducing environmental impact by transitioning to solar power.

The agreement was signed by Etihad Rail Infrastructure CEO Ahmed Al-Yafei and Emerge Chairman Eng. Abdulaziz AlObaidli, witnessed by key industry leaders. It aims to leverage Emerge’s technology to supplement the Ghuweifat freight terminal with renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 8,500 tons over the contract duration. Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting the nation’s goals for a more sustainable future and building greener, more resilient supply chains. The transition to solar power not only reduces environmental impact but also aligns with the shift to a low-carbon and energy-efficient economy.

The collaboration between Etihad Rail and Emerge signifies a pivotal step towards cleaner and more sustainable infrastructure development in the region. By combining the local and international experience of Masdar and EDF Group, the Emerge joint venture is well-equipped to support organizations in reducing their environmental impact. Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi highlighted the significance of this partnership in achieving the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategy. EDF Group CEO Middle East, Luc Koechlin, emphasized their commitment to a sustainable energy future and the contribution towards the UAE’s energy transition.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in Etihad Rail’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and its ESG strategy. The railway network aims to contribute extensively to reducing CO2 emissions in the UAE’s road transport sector by 21% annually by 2050. The Ghuweifat freight terminal plays a crucial role in facilitating cross-border operations and accelerating sustainable logistics solutions. With its strategic location at the border with Saudi Arabia, the terminal is poised to lead the way in eco-friendly freight operations regionally. By integrating solar technology into its network, Etihad Rail aims to operate sustainably and reduce its carbon footprint significantly, setting a new standard for efficient and green logistics and infrastructure in the region.

In conclusion, the agreement between Etihad Rail and Emerge to solarize the Ghuweifat freight terminal represents a significant milestone in advancing sustainability initiatives in the UAE. The transition to solar power not only reduces environmental impact but also supports the UAE’s vision for a more sustainable future. This collaboration between industry leaders like Masdar, EDF Group, and Etihad Rail demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainability and driving the UAE’s energy transition towards a net-zero future. By harnessing renewable energy, Etihad Rail’s Ghuweifat terminal is poised to become a model for efficient and green logistics operations in the region.
