Whitney Houston’s historic concert in South Africa in 1994, shortly after President Nelson Mandela’s election, will be hitting theater screens this fall. The concert has been remastered and retitled “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban)” and will be released in theaters on October 23. This special release will showcase Houston’s never-before-seen performance in Durban, South Africa, and will be followed by a new live album with the same title, to be released on November 8. Pat Houston, the singer’s sister-in-law and estate executor, expressed how much Whitney loved South Africa and its people, making this concert one of the most important of her career.

In 1994, Whitney Houston performed three concerts in South Africa, including one in Durban at Kings Park Stadium, in a newly unified nation post-apartheid. The concerts, celebrating freedom, hope, and unity, drew over 200,000 attendees and the proceeds benefited local South African children’s charities through her foundation. The concert footage has been remastered into 4K video with enhanced audio for the theatrical release, which will be shown in nearly 900 cinemas in more than 25 countries. Rickey Minor, Houston’s musical director for 25 years, reflected on the electric energy of the concerts and how they celebrated the end of apartheid, leaving a lasting impact on him.

Earlier in 1994, Whitney Houston won three Grammy Awards, including album of the year for “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. She was a bestselling artist with over 200 million records sold worldwide and six Grammy Awards under her belt. Her live album will include some of her greatest hits, such as “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “How Will I Know,” and “Greatest Love of All,” as well as the unreleased track “Love Is.” The CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, Marc Allenby, highlighted the continued relevance of the message of hope and unity from Houston’s Durban performance, stating that fans will be blown away by the power of this concert on the big screen.

The release of the concert film and live album comes as a tribute to Whitney Houston’s legacy and her impactful performance in South Africa. The project aims to bring her music and message of hope to a new generation of fans and to honor her love for the people of South Africa and Nelson Mandela. By showcasing this historic concert on theater screens around the world, Houston’s estate and collaborators hope to keep her memory alive and continue spreading the positivity and unity that she stood for. The remastered footage and enhanced audio will allow audiences to experience the magic of Whitney Houston’s live performance in Durban like never before.

Whitney Houston’s impact on the music industry and her ability to connect with audiences through her powerful vocals and meaningful lyrics have solidified her as a music icon. Her influence continues to be felt even after her passing in 2012, with fans still cherishing her music and the messages of love and unity that she promoted. The re-release of her Durban concert and live album is a testament to the lasting legacy of Whitney Houston and the timeless nature of her music. By bringing this concert to theaters, fans will have the opportunity to experience the magic of a Whitney Houston performance and celebrate her incredible talent once again.

Overall, the upcoming theatrical release of Whitney Houston’s Durban concert and live album serves as a tribute to her remarkable career and her impact on the world of music. The remastered footage and enhanced audio will provide audiences with a new perspective on Houston’s legendary performance in South Africa, showcasing her talent and passion for connecting with her fans. As fans eagerly await the release of “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban)” in theaters, they can look forward to experiencing the magic of Whitney Houston’s music on the big screen and celebrating the enduring legacy of one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
