Saudi Arabia recently made headlines for holding its first-ever fashion show that featured swimsuit models. This event marks a significant step in a country where just a few years ago, women were required to wear body-covering robes. The poolside fashion show showcased the work of Moroccan designer Yasmina Qanzal, who presented elegant swimsuits in shades of red, beige, and blue. Qanzal aimed to represent the Arab world through her designs and viewed the event as a historic moment for Saudi Arabia.

The show took place during the Red Sea Fashion Week at the St Regis Red Sea Resort, part of the Saudi giga-projects developed under Vision 2030 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This social and economic reform program aims to modernize Saudi society and diversify its economy. Through various initiatives, Prince Mohammed has worked to soften the country’s conservative image, including reforms such as allowing cinemas, organizing mixed-gender music festivals, and introducing mixed-gender events like this fashion show.

Syrian fashion influencer Shouq Mohammed, who attended the show, highlighted Saudi Arabia’s efforts to open up to the world and grow its fashion and tourism sectors. The fashion industry in the country accounts for a significant portion of the national GDP and provides employment opportunities for thousands of people. The show received positive feedback from attendees like French influencer Raphael Simacourbe, who commended the bravery and achievement of hosting such an event in the Saudi context.

Overall, the swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia represents a milestone in the country’s ongoing transformation and modernization efforts. It symbolizes a shift towards greater openness and diversity in the fashion industry, reflecting changing societal norms and attitudes. As Saudi Arabia continues to embrace new cultural experiences and initiatives, events like these contribute to its growing reputation as a dynamic and evolving society. The success of the fashion show underscores the potential for further progress and innovation in the country’s fashion and entertainment sectors.
