England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford led his team to victory in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-final match against Switzerland. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, and England emerged victorious after a penalty shootout, with Pickford saving Switzerland’s first spot-kick. The win secured England’s place in the semi-finals, where they will face either Turkey or the Netherlands.

The match was a tense affair, with Switzerland taking the lead thanks to Breel Embolo before Bukayo Saka’s goal leveled the score for England. The game remained deadlocked until the penalty shootout, where England’s clinical finishing ensured their progression to the next round. Switzerland’s poor record in major tournament quarter-finals continued, with this defeat marking their fifth consecutive loss at this stage.

Despite the victory, England’s performance was once again underwhelming, with manager Gareth Southgate facing criticism for his team’s lackluster display. However, Southgate’s decision to make tactical changes, including switching to a back three and keeping Saka on the right, ultimately paid off. Saka proved to be a constant threat to the Swiss defense and played a crucial role in England’s late equalizer.

After falling behind, Southgate made crucial substitutions, introducing Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, and Luke Shaw, who helped turn the game in England’s favor. Saka’s goal in extra time brought England level, and the team went on to win the penalty shootout convincingly. This victory was redemption for Saka, who had missed a crucial penalty in the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy.

The win against Switzerland sets up an exciting semi-final clash for England, who will be aiming to end their 58-year drought without a major tournament victory. With the team showing resilience and determination in their quarter-final win, England will be hoping to carry this momentum into the next round. The upcoming semi-final match promises to be a thrilling encounter, as England continue their quest for Euro 2024 glory.
