Emirates has recently joined IATA’s Turbulence Aware Platform to enhance flight safety and efficiency. This move comes in the wake of recent incidents involving turbulence on flights from Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways. By integrating Lido mPilot from Lufthansa Systems, Emirates becomes the first airline to provide real-time accuracy in flight data, allowing pilots to make informed decisions and navigate around turbulent areas for a smoother journey. Over 140 Emirates aircraft have been equipped with the necessary software to automatically share turbulence reports, contributing to a pool of data from all participating airlines.

Captain Hassan Alhammadi, Divisional Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at Emirates, emphasized the airline’s commitment to operational safety, efficiency, and customer comfort. By participating in the Turbulence Aware platform, Emirates aims to contribute data on turbulence through its extensive network across various regions. Frederic Leger, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Products and Services, highlighted the importance of accurate and live data in mitigating turbulence and ensuring a smoother and safer travel experience for passengers. The cooperation between IATA, Emirates, and Lufthansa Systems will enhance the quality and quantity of real-time data available to the aviation industry.

IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform provides global resources for pilots and aviation professionals by offering real-time, detailed, and objective turbulence information. By pooling anonymized data from thousands of flights worldwide, the platform helps pilots and dispatchers choose optimal flight paths, avoid turbulence, maximize fuel efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. Lufthansa Systems’ Lido mPilot is an all-in-one mobile navigational charting application tailored to Emirates’ operational requirements. It provides pilots with easy access to terminal charts, dynamically generated enroute maps, and an Airport Moving Map (AMM), enhancing situational awareness and providing pertinent information for each flight.

The integration of IATA Turbulence Aware data into Lido mPilot offers pilots real-time, accurate, and comprehensive information on turbulence, enabling them to make informed decisions and navigate more efficiently. This integration allows Emirates to increase safety, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize passenger discomfort, ultimately improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. Turbulence Aware has already contributed to safer flights for over 700 million passengers worldwide. With the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and continued commitment to safety and efficiency, Emirates aims to elevate the flying experience for its customers and ensure smoother journeys in the future.
