The 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on January 5, 2025. The big winners of the night were the Mexican-set “Emilia Perez” and the epic immigrant drama “The Brutalist.” French director Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” won four prizes, including best comedy or musical film, while “The Brutalist” took home best drama and best actor for Adrien Brody.

“Emilia Perez” tells the story of a drug lord who transitions to life as a woman and won awards for best non-English language film and best original song. The movie also earned Zoe Saldana the best supporting actress award. On the other hand, “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet, won best director and tells the story of a Jewish architect who survives Nazi persecution and immigrates to the United States.

A remarkable comeback story at the Golden Globes was Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres winning best actress in a drama film for “I’m Still Here.” The movie chronicles a family torn apart by Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s. Demi Moore also had a late-career triumph, winning best actress in a comedy for the body horror film “The Substance,” which addresses societal pressures faced by women as they age.

The Golden Globe Awards, now in year two of a revamp, were hoping to build on ratings bumps from the previous year following a Los Angeles Times expose on the lack of diversity in the awards’ voting body. Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, and categories ranging from drama to comedy were recognized. Notable winners include Sebastian Stan for best actor in a musical or comedy and Kieran Culkin for best supporting actor.

In addition to film awards, the Golden Globes also celebrated television excellence. Shows like “Shogun,” “Hacks,” and “Baby Reindeer” were among the winners in various categories. The awards ceremony highlighted a diverse range of international films and television series, showcasing outstanding talent and storytelling from around the world.
