Eligible professionals in UAE must have a minimum basic salary of Dh30,000 for Golden Visa

The UAE has recently updated the requirements for professionals seeking the Golden Visa, a long-term residency permit. Eligible applicants now need to have a basic monthly salary of Dh30,000, excluding allowances. This change has impacted many residents whose applications were rejected due to not meeting the new criteria. The compensation packages in the UAE typically include basic salaries and allowances such as housing and transport.

According to Nofisatu Mojidi, a senior manager at Fragomen, the salary requirement for the Golden Visa has shifted from a minimum gross salary of Dh30,000 per month inclusive of allowances to a basic salary of Dh30,000 per month excluding allowances. This change essentially means that professionals who meet the threshold through their total compensation package cannot qualify for the 10-year visa. Only applicants with a basic salary of Dh30,000 are currently receiving the long-term visa, making it challenging for those who rely on allowances to meet the requirement.

The Golden Visa scheme was expanded in 2022 to include skilled professionals in various disciplines such as medicine, sciences, engineering, information technology, and more. However, the recent change to the salary requirements has raised the bar for prospective applicants. Mojidi mentioned that there has been a noticeable increase in enquiries from clients concerned about their ability to meet the new basic salary requirement. She advises clients to explore alternative pathways to the Golden Visa, such as securing nominations from government authorities for individuals with unique skills or qualifications.

In addition to the basic salary requirement, applicants must meet several other criteria, including having a valid employment contract and a labour permit, belonging to the first or second professional level as per MoHRE classification, holding at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, possessing a professional practice permit for certain roles, and having comprehensive health insurance for themselves and their family members. This comprehensive set of criteria aims to attract exceptionally talented individuals with substantial earning capacity to the UAE through the Golden Visa scheme.

The change in the Golden Visa requirements signals the UAE’s intent to attract top talent with high earning potential. However, it may pose challenges for current applicants in the pre-approval stage and existing Golden Visa holders during renewal. As the landscape of residency requirements continues to evolve, it is essential for professionals seeking long-term residency in the UAE to stay informed and seek guidance from experts in the field. With the right approach and understanding of the criteria, individuals can navigate the changing requirements and potentially secure the coveted Golden Visa for themselves and their families.
