Dr. Shatha Almutawa, the founder of Kutubna, a bookshop and cultural center in Dubai, has created a space that celebrates khaleeji culture, community building, and a love for arts, poetry, reading, and writing. Kutubna started as a small bookshop but has grown into a center that supports artists, writers, and creatives. Dr. Shatha’s vision for Kutubna is to promote beautiful writing and art in the Arabic language, preserving the intangible cultural heritage of the region.

One of Dr. Shatha’s goals is to make art and creativity a part of everyday life for people in Dubai. She believes that there needs to be a cultural shift that allows creative individuals to make a living from their work. At Kutubna, she has chosen to keep the walls unfinished so that artists can create murals and showcase their work. Dr. Shatha aims to create a world within the center that reflects her vision of a community that supports artists and creatives.

Dr. Shatha, being of Kuwaiti and Emirati descent, understands the importance of celebrating khaleeji culture through Kutubna. She recognizes the differences in Kuwaiti and Emirati cultures and dialects but also sees the value in a unified khaleeji identity. Dr. Shatha’s experiences living in the US made her appreciate the privilege and belonging that being a khaleeji citizen provides, which is unique to the region.

Inclusive community building is a key aspect of Kutubna, as Dr. Shatha aims to create a welcoming and diverse space for all. The center offers accessible facilities for mothers and children and provides free programs and scholarships to ensure financial accessibility. Dr. Shatha believes that celebrating the diversity of Dubai’s international community is crucial in showcasing the richness of the culture and heritage of the region.

Running Kutubna has brought both joys and challenges for Dr. Shatha. She has enjoyed meeting creative individuals in Dubai who share a passion for literature and the arts. However, the biggest challenge the center faces is financial viability. Dr. Shatha emphasizes the importance of community support in making Kutubna sustainable and ensuring fair wages for staff. By becoming a member, attending events, and supporting the center, individuals can contribute to the vision of an inclusive cultural space that Kutubna represents.

In conclusion, Kutubna, under the guidance of Dr. Shatha Almutawa, serves as a beacon for celebrating khaleeji culture, promoting arts and literature, and fostering a sense of community in Dubai. Through her vision and dedication, Dr. Shatha has created a space that embraces inclusivity, creativity, and the rich cultural heritage of the region. As Kutubna continues to grow and evolve, community support will be vital in sustaining its mission of providing a platform for artists, writers, and creatives in the UAE.
