Dubai has unveiled a comprehensive plan to revolutionize its sports sector by 2033, with the goal of establishing the emirate as a global hub for sporting excellence. The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, presented by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, outlines a multi-faceted approach to drive competitiveness, foster sustainable growth, and enhance the overall sports ecosystem.

The strategic plan was launched at an event held at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, attended by representatives from the local and international sports communities, industry stakeholders, and executives. The plan is expected to have a significant impact on Dubai’s economy, with the sports sector’s GDP contribution projected to increase from Dh10.17 billion to Dh18.3 billion annually by 2033.

Dubai Sports Sector Development

The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 focuses on several key areas, including talent development, community participation, and infrastructure development. The plan aims to nurture young talent, promote widespread participation in sports, and develop world-class facilities that reflect Dubai’s ambition and capability.

A new sporting identity for Dubai was also unveiled, which was chosen from thousands of submissions received through a public call for entries. The identity is designed to unify the emirate’s extensive sporting networks and signal Dubai’s commitment to excel as a home for athletes, major sporting events, and sports innovation.

Priority Sports and Economic Impact

The strategic plan identifies 17 priority sports, categorized into three segments: Emerging Sports, Community Sports, and Sports with Global Reach. Emerging Sports, such as padel and Esports, are witnessing rapid growth, while Community Sports, including running and swimming, promote inclusive participation. Sports with Global Reach, such as golf and cricket, are expected to generate significant economic returns.

According to the plan, the number of physically active residents is projected to rise from 1.6 million to 2.6 million, and attendance at major sporting events is expected to increase from 1.67 million to 4.1 million annually by 2033. The plan also aims to empower both public and private clubs to reach international standards, expanding community participation and developing world-class facilities and infrastructure.

Implementation and Oversight

The Dubai Sports Council intends to implement oversight systems, monitor performance through defined indicators, and support public-private partnerships to facilitate effective execution and continued viability of the strategy. The council will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the plan.

The World Sports Summit, scheduled to be held in Dubai, will showcase the strategic plan’s priorities and Dubai’s new sporting identity, attracting international personalities and key industry figures. The event is expected to provide a platform for discussion and collaboration among stakeholders, further solidifying Dubai’s position as a global sports hub.

As Dubai embarks on this ambitious journey to transform its sports sector, the success of the plan will depend on the effective implementation and collaboration among stakeholders. The next steps and progress updates are expected to be closely watched by industry stakeholders and sports enthusiasts alike.
