Is your phone a permanent bathroom fixture? You might want to think twice before settling in for a long stay on the throne. Experts warn that spending extended periods of time on the toilet can have negative effects on your health, including an increased risk of hemorrhoids and weakened pelvic muscles. It might be tempting to scroll through social media or catch up on emails while you go number two, but the consequences could be more serious than you realize.

According to experts, spending more than five to 10 minutes on the toilet can lead to increased pressure on the veins and blood vessels surrounding the anus and lower rectum, which can cause hemorrhoids. Gravity plays a role in this as well, as it forces the body to work harder to pump blood back up to the heart while you’re sitting on the toilet. The combination of gravity and prolonged sitting can result in enlarged and engorged blood vessels, contributing to a higher risk of hemorrhoids.

Forced straining to have a bowel movement can further exacerbate the issue, leading to weakened anal muscles and an increased risk of rectal prolapse. Sitting on the toilet bowl for too long can also strain the pelvic floor muscles, which are essential for healthy bowel movements. To prevent these issues, experts recommend limiting your time in the bathroom, avoiding distractions like phones and books, and staying hydrated and eating a high-fiber diet to promote regular bowel movements.

In some cases, lingering on the toilet for an extended period of time may be a symptom of an underlying gastrointestinal issue, such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease. It can also be a sign of colorectal cancer, especially if accompanied by constipation or other symptoms. With the rise in colorectal cancer rates among young adults, it’s important to pay attention to any changes in bathroom habits and seek medical attention if necessary. Your doctor can refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment if needed.

In conclusion, while it might be tempting to spend extra time on the toilet with your phone in hand, it’s important to be mindful of the potential health risks associated with prolonged sitting. By making some simple changes to your bathroom habits, such as limiting distractions and maintaining a healthy diet and hydration levels, you can help prevent issues like hemorrhoids and pelvic floor muscle weakness. If you’re experiencing ongoing bathroom problems, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor for further evaluation and guidance on how to keep your gastrointestinal health in check.
