Employees calling in sick due to smoking-related illnesses is a growing concern, as doctors in the UAE have reported writing up to seven sick notes in a single day for patients with smoking-related health issues. Smoking is not only detrimental to one’s health but also leads to increased workplace absenteeism and healthcare costs. The most common illnesses that smokers require leave for include asthma exacerbations, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease (ILD) may also necessitate extended sick leaves.

Doctors have emphasized the need for smoke-free workplaces in order to reduce absenteeism rates resulting from smoking-related illnesses. The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has called on employers to make workplaces tobacco-free, which can result in increased productivity and decreased absenteeism among employees. Smoke breaks taken during work hours can also make it difficult for employees to quit smoking, as it becomes a mental break for them. Smoking employees may gain over three weeks of paid time off through smoking breaks annually.

While some employees assume that vaping is allowed in offices, prevailing laws in the UAE prohibit smoking e-cigarettes inside offices and enclosed spaces. Vaping in the workplace poses a higher risk to people’s health and exposes colleagues to second-hand smoke. Proper ventilation systems may remove the smell and visible aspects of smoke but do not eliminate the toxic substances causing cancer. The only way to effectively protect against passive smoking exposure is by preventing people from inhaling indirect smoke.

It is essential for companies to create smoke-free policies in their offices to minimize employees’ preoccupation with smoking and allow them to focus on their tasks. Employees who smoke tend to take breaks more frequently, but it is important for all employees to have regular breaks to maintain productivity. However, it is crucial to follow the rules and regulations regarding smoking and vaping in the workplace to ensure a healthy and productive work environment.

In conclusion, smoking-related illnesses are a significant cause of absenteeism in the workplace, leading to increased healthcare costs and productivity loss. Employers should take steps to create smoke-free workplaces and encourage employees to quit smoking for their own health and well-being. By implementing tobacco-free policies and enforcing regulations on smoking and vaping in the workplace, companies can promote a healthier work environment and reduce the negative impact of smoking-related illnesses on employees and businesses.
