Sri Lanka claimed a 63-run victory in the opening Test against New Zealand at Galle International Stadium. Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took a five-wicket haul to wrap up the New Zealand tail, despite Rachin Ravindra’s impressive 92 runs. New Zealand struggled to negotiate the sharp turn and low bounce at the venue, ending their innings at 211 chasing a target of 275. Sri Lanka’s home captain Dhananjaya de Silva credited their morale-boosting win in England for their success in the Test match.

Prabath Jayasuriya claimed his eighth five-wicket haul, with seven of them coming at Galle alone. Jayasuriya’s performance earned him the player of the match award, while Ramesh Mendis took three wickets in the second innings. New Zealand captain Tim Southee acknowledged the tough conditions in Galle but highlighted the positives to take away from the match. The second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is set to begin on Thursday, with both teams looking to make a comeback after the thrilling conclusion of the first Test.

New Zealand started the final day needing 68 runs for a memorable victory with two wickets in hand. However, Sri Lanka needed only four overs to secure the win, with Jayasuriya dismissing Ravindra and O’Rourke to seal the victory. Ravindra’s magnificent knock included nine fours and a six, but his innings came to an end when he was trapped lbw by Jayasuriya. The defeat was disappointing for New Zealand, as they failed to capitalize on their slim chances and succumbed to Sri Lanka’s spin attack in unfavorable conditions.

Despite the loss, New Zealand captain Tim Southee praised the competitive nature of the Test match and acknowledged the learnings to be taken from the experience. Jayasuriya expressed his fondness for the Galle pitch and credited his success to focusing on bowling a consistent line and length. With the second Test set to take place in Galle, both teams will be eager to make the necessary adjustments and put up a strong performance in the upcoming match. Sri Lanka’s ability to win Tests was evident in their victory over New Zealand, highlighting the competitive spirit and talent within the team.
