The Sultanate of Oman is actively strengthening its commitment to accurate and reliable measurements, a cornerstone of modern industry and trade. Recent initiatives, spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), demonstrate a focused effort on developing a robust metrology infrastructure and ensuring international recognition of Omani standards. A key workshop held on January 20, 2026, signifies a major step forward in this crucial area, solidifying Oman’s position in the global marketplace.

Enhancing Measurement Accuracy: Oman’s Workshop on Designated Laboratories

The MoCIIP, through its Directorate General for Standards and Metrology (DGSM), hosted a significant workshop in collaboration with the GCC Standardization Organization. This event brought together stakeholders from diverse sectors – including industry, healthcare, services, and regulatory bodies – all united by the need for precise and verifiable measurements. The workshop’s core focus was the designation of measurement and calibration laboratories, a vital component of a functioning national calibration system.

The Role of Designated Institutes (DIs)

Imad bin Khamis Al Shukaili, Director General of DGSM, emphasized the workshop’s purpose: to clarify the responsibilities and services provided by Designated Institutes (DIs). These institutes are pivotal in disseminating internationally recognized units of measurement throughout Oman. They act as a bridge, ensuring that measurements made within the country align with global standards, fostering trust and facilitating international trade.

The workshop wasn’t conceived in isolation. It builds upon the substantial progress made in 2025, where the National Calibration Centre successfully calibrated 970 devices and instruments. Furthermore, over 2,300 scales and liquid fuel pumps underwent verification, generating revenues of RO 16,500. This demonstrates a growing demand for, and capacity in, accurate measurement services within Oman.

Strengthening Oman’s Competitiveness Through Metrology

Al Shukaili highlighted that this workshop represents a “qualitative step” in developing Oman’s technical capabilities and optimizing resource allocation. This isn’t merely a technical exercise; it’s a strategic investment in the nation’s economic future. Accurate measurement and calibration are directly linked to the competitiveness of Omani products and services on the international stage.

Without reliable measurements, businesses face challenges in demonstrating product quality, complying with international regulations, and securing lucrative export contracts. By investing in a world-class metrology infrastructure, Oman is actively removing these barriers and creating a more favorable environment for economic growth. This also provides crucial consumer protection, ensuring fair trade practices and product safety.

Aligning with Global Standards: The CIPM MRA

A key discussion point at the workshop revolved around governance and the mechanisms for designating laboratories in accordance with the international mutual recognition arrangement (CIPM MRA). The CIPM MRA is a global framework that allows countries to recognize the measurement results of other participating nations.

Achieving CIPM MRA recognition is a significant accomplishment, demonstrating that Oman’s metrology services meet the highest international standards. This recognition streamlines trade, reduces technical barriers, and enhances confidence in Omani measurements. It positions Oman as a reliable partner in the global metrology community.

Implementation of National Legislation and Future Growth

The workshop is a direct result of the implementation of the Law on Measurement and Calibration No. (17/2013). This legislation provides the legal framework for establishing and maintaining a robust national metrology system. The activation of the National Calibration Centre under the DGSM is also crucial, as it serves as the central hub for completing the International System of Units (SI) within Oman.

The ongoing development of this infrastructure is expected to have a ripple effect across various sectors. From ensuring the accuracy of medical devices to guaranteeing the quality of manufactured goods, reliable measurements are essential for progress. The MoCIIP’s commitment to entrenching the concepts of measurement and calibration will undoubtedly lead to more efficient processes, reduced errors, and increased innovation. The focus on developing a strong technical infrastructure is a long-term investment in Oman’s future.

Looking Ahead: A Future Built on Accurate Measurement

The recent workshop underscores Oman’s dedication to building a world-class metrology infrastructure. This commitment is not only vital for economic development and international trade but also for protecting consumers and fostering trust in Omani products and services. By aligning with global standards, such as the CIPM MRA, and actively investing in national capabilities, Oman is solidifying its position as a leading nation in this critical field.

The continued success of the National Calibration Centre, coupled with the effective designation of measurement and calibration laboratories, will be instrumental in achieving Oman’s Vision 2040 goals. This proactive approach to measurement science will undoubtedly contribute to a more prosperous and competitive future for the Sultanate of Oman.
