Oman is taking significant steps to bolster worker safety with increased scrutiny of safety footwear available in the local market. Recent findings from the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology (DGSM) at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) reveal that a substantial number of brands are failing to meet required safety standards. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to protecting its workforce and ensuring a safe working environment across all sectors.

Increased Oversight of Safety Footwear in Oman

The DGSM’s recent assessment of 16 registered safety footwear brands highlighted a concerning trend: 10 brands did not pass the rigorous testing requirements. This discovery is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen product oversight and minimize occupational hazards. Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Shaeili, a physicist at the DGSM, emphasized that worker safety is paramount, and the Ministry is actively investing in advanced technology to ensure thorough and accurate product evaluations.

Advanced Testing Capabilities

To achieve this, the Ministry has introduced state-of-the-art testing equipment, including a sophisticated impact resistance testing device specifically designed for safety footwear. This equipment utilizes advanced technologies to deliver precise and reliable results, leaving no room for ambiguity in the assessment process. The Physics and Building Materials Laboratory is central to these efforts, conducting comprehensive tests on key characteristics.

These characteristics include impact and compression resistance, crucial for protecting feet from falling objects and heavy loads. Furthermore, the laboratory assesses puncture resistance, ensuring protection against sharp objects on the worksite. The quality and durability of the materials used in manufacturing are also rigorously evaluated, guaranteeing long-lasting protection for workers. This focus on protective footwear quality is a key component of the overall safety strategy.

Comprehensive Market Inspections

The DGSM’s inspections aren’t limited to locally manufactured products. They encompass all safety footwear available in the Omani market, whether produced domestically or imported. This broad scope ensures that all workers, regardless of where their footwear originates, are afforded the same level of protection. Inspections target a wide range of work environments, including industrial sites, construction zones, and other potentially hazardous workplaces.

The primary goal of these inspections is to verify strict compliance with approved standard specifications. By ensuring adherence to these standards, the Ministry aims to proactively protect workers from potential injuries and significantly reduce occupational risks. This proactive approach to workplace safety is a significant step forward for Oman.

Adherence to International Standards

These mandatory tests are not conducted in isolation. They are meticulously carried out in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including ISO 20344, which details specific test methods for protective footwear. Additionally, the DGSM adheres to ISO 20345, which outlines the fundamental safety requirements that all protective footwear must meet. This commitment to global standards reinforces the credibility and effectiveness of the testing process.

The 2025 test results clearly demonstrate the importance of these procedures. While six brands successfully passed the tests, the failure of ten brands underscores the need for continued vigilance and rigorous quality control. This data highlights the prevalence of non-compliant products and the critical role of the DGSM in maintaining market quality and ensuring hazard prevention.

Commitment to Ongoing Improvement

The Directorate General of Standards and Metrology has firmly reaffirmed its dedication to continuing its inspection and testing measures. This ongoing commitment is designed to enhance consumer confidence and reinforce adherence to both safety standards and overall product quality. The DGSM is committed to aligning its practices with international best practices, ensuring that Oman’s safety standards remain at the forefront of industry standards.

Ultimately, the DGSM’s efforts are aimed at creating a safer and more secure working environment for all in Oman. By prioritizing the quality and compliance of safety footwear, the Ministry is taking a proactive step towards reducing workplace accidents and protecting the well-being of its workforce. Consumers and employers are encouraged to prioritize certified safety footwear and report any concerns regarding product quality to the DGSM.
