Nestled high in the Al Hajar mountains, Jabal Akhdar, the “Green Mountain” of Oman, is undergoing a significant transformation. A comprehensive package of development, service, and tourism projects, totaling OMR9 million, is underway, promising to elevate the region’s appeal and improve the lives of those who live and visit. These initiatives are designed to capitalize on the area’s unique natural beauty and establish it as a premier destination within the Sultanate.
Infrastructure Improvements in Jabal Akhdar
A key focus of the current development is enhancing the infrastructure of Jabal Akhdar. Sheikh Sultan Mansour Al Ghafili, Wali of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, highlighted the crucial projects aimed at improving connectivity and accessibility. The development of the wilayat’s entrance is a priority, creating a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing arrival point for tourists.
Road Network Expansion and Safety
Perhaps the most impactful improvement is the dualization of the main road leading into Jabal Akhdar. This upgrade, alongside the paving of numerous internal roads, will dramatically improve traffic flow and enhance safety for all users. Further road projects are currently in the awarding phase, indicating a continued commitment to expanding and modernizing the transportation network. These improvements are vital for facilitating access to the region’s growing number of tourist attractions and residential areas.
Boosting Tourism and Community Life
Beyond infrastructure, the projects are heavily geared towards enriching the tourism experience and fostering a vibrant community atmosphere. The newly established Al Jabal Al Akhdar Park provides a much-needed urban green space, offering residents and visitors a tranquil environment for relaxation and recreation. This park is a testament to the commitment to improving the overall quality of life in the region.
The recently completed Celebrations and Festivals Square is another significant addition. This integrated space is designed to host seasonal events and activities, providing a platform for cultural expression and community gatherings. Importantly, the square also incorporates facilities to support entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), stimulating local economic activity and providing opportunities for growth. This focus on supporting local businesses is a cornerstone of the development strategy for Jabal Akhdar.
Private Sector Investment and Diversification
The government’s initiatives are attracting substantial private sector investment, further accelerating the development of Jabal Akhdar. A notable project is the construction of an integrated commercial complex in Hayl Al Yaman. This complex will feature a three-star hotel, an educational garden, an entertainment center, and a commercial market, diversifying the range of services available to visitors and residents alike.
Other exciting investment projects include a unique 3D open-air arena in Seeh Qatana and the development of Da’an Al-Busaytain Park. The ongoing operation of Seeh Qatana Park, with its entertainment facilities, restaurant, and breathtaking mountain viewpoint, demonstrates the commitment to leveraging the region’s natural assets. These projects aim to create a more compelling and varied tourism offering, attracting a wider range of visitors.
The Ambitious ‘Al Jabal Al A’ali’ Tourism City
At the heart of the long-term vision for Jabal Akhdar lies the ‘Al Jabal Al A’ali’ (High Mountain) Tourism City. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of RO 1.2 billion, is poised to become a landmark destination. Spanning over 11.8 square kilometers at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters, the city will offer a unique blend of residential, hospitality, and recreational facilities.
The plans include over 2,500 residential units capable of accommodating around 10,000 people, alongside a hotel system boasting more than 2,000 rooms. A world-class golf course, the highest in the region, covering 1.5 million square meters, is also a key feature. Furthermore, the city will incorporate over 10 architectural, cultural, and tourist landmarks, designed to showcase the rich heritage and natural beauty of Oman. This project represents a significant investment in the future of tourism in Oman.
Sustainability and the Green Economy
The ‘Al Jabal Al A’ali’ Tourism City is being developed with a strong emphasis on sustainability and the green economy. The project will rely heavily on renewable energy sources and implement smart, low-emission mobility solutions. This commitment to environmental responsibility not only minimizes the project’s impact on the delicate mountain ecosystem but also positions Jabal Akhdar as a leader in sustainable tourism. The project is expected to generate numerous job opportunities and provide a substantial boost to the local economy.
Additionally, a new cable car (telepherique) project is being developed to connect A’Dakhiliyah Governorate with South Al Batinah Governorate, further enhancing accessibility to this important tourist site and promoting regional integration.
A Bright Future for Jabal Akhdar
Sheikh Sultan Mansour Al Ghafili emphasized that A’Dakhiliyah Governorate is prioritizing projects that respect the unique characteristics of the mountainous environment, deliver high added value, diversify income sources, and create sustainable job opportunities. The focus on tourism and SMEs is particularly important for ensuring long-term economic prosperity. These efforts are solidifying Jabal Akhdar’s position as a leading tourism and development destination within the Sultanate of Oman. With ongoing investment and a commitment to sustainable practices, the future of this breathtaking region looks exceptionally bright. Visitors can expect an increasingly sophisticated and enriching experience as these projects come to fruition, making Jabal Akhdar a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Oman.
