Doha is experiencing a period of cold weather with increased fog, potentially impacting visibility across the region. The Department of Meteorology issued a daily report on Friday forecasting cold temperatures, scattered clouds, and hazy conditions that will likely develop into misty or foggy patches late into the night. Residents and travelers should be prepared for reduced visibility, particularly in northern areas, and exercise caution.

Inshore ConditionsOffshore Outlook and Marine Safety

The forecast extends through 6:00 AM on Saturday, with similar conditions expected both inshore and offshore. While inshore winds are predicted to be light and variable, offshore winds may become gusty, especially in the north, contributing to higher sea states. This combination of factors necessitates awareness of potential disruptions to daily activities and marine traffic.

Understanding the Current Weather in Doha

The current cold snap is typical for Qatar during the winter months, although the intensity of the fog is notable. According to the Department of Meteorology, the prevailing northwesterly winds are drawing in cooler air from land, while high humidity levels are creating the conditions for mist and fog formation. This pattern is common when there is a significant temperature difference between the air and the relatively warmer sea surface.

Inshore Conditions

Inshore areas will see temperatures remaining relatively cool throughout the day and night. The report indicates visibility could drop to 2 kilometers or less in some locations due to the late-night fog. Winds are expected to be light, shifting to variable later in the evening.

Offshore Outlook and Marine Safety

Offshore conditions present a slightly more complex picture. While generally hazy with scattered clouds, there’s a chance of light rain in northern areas. Winds are forecast to be northwesterly to northerly, with gusts potentially reaching 18 knots in the north. This will lead to sea states of 1 to 3 feet, surging to 5 feet in the northern sector, posing challenges for smaller vessels. Mariners are advised to check the latest weather updates before heading to sea and to navigate with caution.

The reduced visibility also impacts other forms of transportation. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and increase following distances. Additionally, aviation authorities may implement delays or diversions at Hamad International Airport if visibility falls below acceptable limits. Travelers should monitor flight information for any potential disruptions.

The Department of Meteorology’s report highlights the importance of staying informed about weather conditions, especially during periods of rapid change. The combination of cold temperatures, humidity, and wind creates a heightened risk of fog, which can significantly impact safety. This is particularly relevant for those involved in transportation, both on land and at sea.

Qatar has invested heavily in weather monitoring and forecasting infrastructure in recent years, aiming to provide accurate and timely information to the public. This includes a network of weather stations, radar systems, and satellite data analysis. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change continues to refine its forecasting models to better predict and mitigate the impacts of adverse weather events. More information can be found on the Ministry’s website.

Looking ahead, the Department of Meteorology anticipates similar weather patterns to continue in the coming days. The persistence of the northwesterly winds and high humidity suggests that foggy conditions will remain a concern, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours. Residents should continue to monitor forecasts and take necessary precautions. The duration and intensity of the fog remain uncertain and will depend on evolving atmospheric conditions.

The current weather forecast is expected to be updated regularly, and any significant changes will be communicated to the public through official channels. The Peninsula Qatar will continue to provide updates on the situation as it develops. The potential for Qatar weather can vary, so staying informed is crucial.
