Turkey’s Merih Demiral played a significant role in his team’s 2-1 victory over Austria, securing their spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Demiral scored two goals, one just 57 seconds into the match and the second with a powerful header before the hour mark. The win sets up a clash against the Netherlands in the next round. Despite Austria’s efforts to cut the deficit with a goal from Michael Gregoritsch, it was not enough to overcome the Turks.

The match started with a fast-paced goal by Demiral, marking the fastest ever goal in a European Championship knockout match. Turkey continued to play defensively, allowing Austria to have more possession but pressing high with a 5-4-1 system. They disrupted Austria’s playing style and managed to keep them at bay despite missing their suspended captain, Hakan Calhanoglou. Turkey’s solid defense prevented Austria from getting any shots on target in the first half.

Austria came out strong in the second half and had a chance to equalize, but a crucial save from Turkey’s goalkeeper Mert Gunok denied them. Instead, it was Demiral who extended Turkey’s lead with a second goal. Although Austria managed to pull one back through Gregoritsch, they failed to find an equalizer despite late pressure. Christoph Baumgartner had a golden chance but was denied by a superb save from Gunok in stoppage time.

The victory was a bitter end for Austria, who have not won a knockout match in a major tournament since 1954. Turkey, on the other hand, advanced to the quarter-finals with a strong performance from Demiral. The Turks will now face the Netherlands in the next round, setting up an exciting clash between the two teams. Overall, it was a thrilling match that showcased Turkey’s defensive strength and ability to capitalize on their chances.

In summary, Turkey’s Merih Demiral led his team to a 2-1 victory over Austria, securing their spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Demiral scored two goals, setting up a clash against the Netherlands in the next round. Despite Austria’s efforts to come back, Turkey’s solid defense and clinical finishing proved to be the difference in the match. The victory was a bitter end for Austria, who have not won a knockout match in a major tournament since 1954. Turkey’s strong defensive performance and ability to capitalize on their chances were key to their success in the match. Overall, it was an exciting and competitive game that showcased the talent and determination of both teams.
