WhatsApp groups have become a popular tool for communication among parents in the UAE, especially when it comes to school-related matters. While these groups can be beneficial for sharing updates on school events, assignments, and important notices, many parents have noticed that they can also become overwhelmed with irrelevant messages and off-topic discussions. Some parents use the group to vent personal grievances or complaints, which can lead to misunderstandings and frustration among members. This misuse of the platform has led to some parents feeling that WhatsApp groups can be more of a headache than a helpful resource.

Karen Carvalho, a parent at a Dubai school, shared her experience of witnessing arguments and moralizing chats within the school WhatsApp group. She noted that these discussions often spiral out of control, leading to tension and negativity among parents. While WhatsApp groups can be a helpful tool for quick updates and community-building, they can also become a source of unnecessary drama and conflict if not managed properly. Some parents have suggested creating multiple groups for different needs, such as official announcements or casual discussions, to streamline communication and prevent chaos.

Christine Quartier La Tente, a parent whose daughter attends Raffles World Academy, highlighted the benefits of the school WhatsApp group for working parents. She mentioned that the group helps parents stay informed about school events, homework, and other important information, ultimately fostering a sense of community among members. However, she also pointed out that discussions in the group should remain respectful and relevant to school-related matters to avoid unnecessary drama and tension among parents.

Bhavya Rao, a parent with two daughters at Dubai British School, shared her struggles with managing multiple WhatsApp groups and balancing relevant school updates with irrelevant messages. She emphasized the importance of having a group admin to moderate discussions and keep the conversation on track. Rao urged parents to use the platform responsibly and refrain from engaging in heated arguments or off-topic discussions that can disrupt the group’s purpose of sharing important information about school activities.

Headteachers in Dubai noted that schools have guidelines in place for appropriate communication between parents and schools. Simon Herbert, Head of School/CEO at GEMS International School – Al Khail, emphasized the importance of maintaining respect and professionalism in all communications, both online and offline. Schools may create temporary WhatsApp groups for specific events or updates, but it is important to ensure that these groups are dissolved after their purpose has been served to avoid information overload and informal communication that may reduce professionalism.

In conclusion, while WhatsApp groups can be a valuable tool for communication among parents and schools, it is essential for members to use the platform responsibly and respectfully. By setting clear guidelines for communication, creating separate groups for different needs, and appointing admins to moderate discussions, parents can ensure that the school WhatsApp group remains a helpful and efficient resource for sharing important information and fostering community among members. Ultimately, by maintaining professionalism and respect in all online interactions, parents can avoid unnecessary drama and tensions that may arise from misuse of the platform.
