Doha, Qatar – The National Sports Day Committee of Qatar has unveiled plans for the 2026 iteration of the annual event, scheduled for February. With the theme “I Chose Sports,” the initiative aims to promote National Sports Day as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle for all residents. Organizers anticipate over 800 community sports events will take place nationwide, building on significant participation increases seen in 2025.
The announcement, made at a press conference held at Lusail Sports Hall, detailed a broad agenda of sports, recreational, and cultural activities. These events will be hosted in public parks, sports facilities, and various locations across Qatar, with the involvement of both public and private sector organizations. The goal is to encourage participation from all segments of Qatari society, according to committee chairman Abdulrahman bin Muslim Al Dosari.
Expanding the Culture of Sports in Qatar
The evolution of National Sports Day from a single annual event to a national platform reflects a growing emphasis on physical activity and well-being within Qatar. Al Dosari emphasized that the committee’s intention is to move beyond simply holding an event, and instead foster a sustained commitment to sports as an integral part of daily life. This aligns with Qatar’s national vision for a healthy, active, and sustainable society.
However, the initiative isn’t solely focused on large-scale events. The Qatar Sports for All Federation (QSFA) has been actively expanding its reach through programs like the “365 Days of Activity” initiative, which saw 35,000 participants engage in 1,460 sports sessions in 2025. This program, utilizing 36 community coaches, demonstrates a commitment to accessible, year-round fitness opportunities.
Increased Participation in Community Sports
Data released by QSFA’s Executive Director, Abdullah Al Dosari, reveals a substantial increase in participation across various programs in 2025. Total participation reached 215,506, a rise from 206,000 in the previous year. This growth was evident in several key areas, including Farjan football fields (58,751 participants), walking and running activities (13,800 participants), and school-based programs (22,259 participants).
Additionally, community running events saw a significant boost, with participation increasing to 38,696. Notably, female participation in sports races rose to 8,000 across 59 events, indicating growing engagement among women in physical activity. The QSFA’s “Sports for All” application, which tracks participation and event information, has been downloaded by over 73,000 users, further demonstrating the increasing interest in physical fitness.
Looking Ahead to February 2026
The 2026 National Sports Day calendar promises an even more extensive range of activities, exceeding 800 events in collaboration with various partners. Organizers are focused on maintaining the high quality of events while expanding their reach to new locations and demographics. The success of these initiatives will likely depend on continued collaboration between public and private entities, as well as sustained investment in sports infrastructure and community programs.
The next step involves finalizing event details and launching a comprehensive promotional campaign to encourage widespread participation. While the full schedule is still under development, the committee aims to build on the momentum of 2025 and further solidify Qatar’s commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for all its residents. The effectiveness of the “I Chose Sports” message and its impact on long-term behavioral changes will be a key area to watch in the coming year. Read more at The Peninsula Qatar.
