North Carolina’s Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson has filed a lawsuit against CNN, accusing the network of defamation over a report that claimed he made explicit racial and sexual posts on a pornography website’s message board. The CNN report alleged that Robinson made inflammatory remarks on a pornographic website over a decade ago, including calling himself a “black Nazi” and praising Adolf Hitler over former US President Barack Obama. Robinson, who could potentially be North Carolina’s first black governor if elected, has denied creating the offensive posts and called the report a “high-tech lynching” by political opponents trying to ruin his campaign. The lawsuit seeks at least $50 million in damages and argues that CNN ignored evidence showing that Robinson’s data may have been compromised in various breaches.

The lawsuit, filed in Wake County Superior Court, comes after the report led many Republican officials, including former President Donald Trump, to distance themselves from Robinson’s gubernatorial campaign. In addition to CNN, the lawsuit also names Greensboro punk singer Louis Love Money, who accused Robinson of visiting a porn shop in the 1990s and early 2000s. Robinson denies these allegations and claims they are part of a coordinated effort to derail his campaign. Key staff members from Robinson’s campaign resigned following the report, and the Republican Governors Association withdrew its financial support. The campaign has adjusted its strategy by reducing television advertisements and focusing more on in-person events. Despite facing past criticism on issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, Robinson remains behind in polls compared to his Democratic rival, Josh Stein.

Despite the controversy and lawsuits, CNN has chosen not to comment on the situation. On the other hand, Stein’s spokesperson has expressed doubts about Robinson’s suitability for governor even before the report was released, highlighting the need for better leadership in North Carolina. The allegations against Robinson have not only affected his campaign but also raised questions about his past statements and actions. The lawsuit aims to clear Robinson’s name and hold those responsible for the damaging claims against him accountable. The legal battle is ongoing, as Robinson fights to overcome the negative impact of the CNN report and regain support for his gubernatorial bid.

In conclusion, the lawsuit filed by Mark Robinson against CNN highlights the challenges faced by political candidates in the age of digital media and the power of misinformation to damage a campaign. The allegations made in the CNN report have had a significant impact on Robinson’s candidacy, leading to the loss of key staff members, financial support, and a decrease in public opinion polls. Despite facing criticism for controversial statements in the past, Robinson maintains his innocence regarding the offensive posts attributed to him on the pornographic website. The legal battle aims to vindicate Robinson and restore his reputation as he continues to campaign for the governorship of North Carolina. It remains to be seen how the lawsuit will unfold and what impact it will have on the upcoming election, but Robinson is determined to overcome the challenges and prove his suitability for the role of governor. The outcome of the lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for both Robinson and the future of political campaigns in the digital age.
