The General Directorate of Civil Defense has issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise caution due to forecasted thunderstorms across most regions of Saudi Arabia from Friday until Monday, potentially causing flash floods and related hazards. The directorate’s warning emphasizes the need for the public to remain in safe locations and avoid areas prone to flash flooding.

According to the directorate, the Makkah region is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash floods, hail, and dust storms. Meanwhile, Riyadh is anticipated to be affected by light to moderate rain accompanied by dust storms.

Regional Weather Forecast and Precautions

The directorate stated that several regions, including Madinah, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Hail, Qassim, Eastern Province, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan, are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, while Tabuk will see light to moderate rain. The public is advised to stay away from valleys and areas known to be susceptible to flash flooding.

The regions forecasted to be most affected are those with low-lying areas or valleys, where water tends to accumulate rapidly during heavy rainfall. Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation instructions from local authorities if necessary.

Implications of Flash Flooding

Flash flooding can lead to significant disruptions, including damage to infrastructure, displacement of people, and risks to life. The directorate’s warning highlights the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines to mitigate these risks.

Additionally, the anticipated dust storms may reduce visibility, potentially causing disruptions to daily activities and travel. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving during such conditions, reducing speed and using appropriate lighting.

Understanding Flash Flood Risks

Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall overwhelms the ground’s ability to absorb water, leading to rapid rises in water levels. This can happen with little warning, making timely warnings and public awareness critical to preventing casualties.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense’s advisory is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety during adverse weather conditions. The directorate works closely with meteorological agencies to monitor weather forecasts and issue timely warnings.

As the weather situation continues to unfold, the public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to follow the guidance provided by local authorities. The forecast indicates that the weather conditions are expected to persist until Monday, with the situation being closely monitored by relevant agencies.

Residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared for potential disruptions. The next update on the weather forecast is expected shortly, which will provide further clarity on the expected duration and severity of the thunderstorms.
