Doha, Qatar – Britain’s Harry Charles secured a thrilling victory in the CSI4* 1.55m Jump-Off Grand Prix at Al Shaqab’s Longines Outdoor Arena yesterday, marking the conclusion of the opening Tour of the inaugural H H The Father Amir’s Prix. The prestigious equestrian event, overseen by the Qatar Olympic Committee, saw Charles and his gelding Casquo Blue outperform a competitive field, highlighting Qatar’s growing prominence as a global equestrian hub.

The event, held at Al Shaqab, a world-renowned equestrian facility, drew top riders from around the globe. Qatar Olympic Committee President and President of the Organising Committee of the Doha Equestrian Tour, H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, presented awards to the winning riders, underscoring the nation’s commitment to supporting the sport. The competition included several levels of competition, showcasing talent across the equestrian disciplines.

Grand Prix Showdown at Al Shaqab

Harry Charles’ winning time of 38.20 seconds in the jump-off proved just enough to edge out fellow British rider Scott Brash, who finished a close second with Hello Folie (38.48 seconds). Thailand’s Janakabhorn Karunayadhaj rounded out the podium, securing third place with Maxwin Kinmar Bespoke in 40.14 seconds. Charles, elated with the win, described the course as “well designed and challenging.”

The competition wasn’t limited to the CSI4* level. Earlier in the day, Oliver Fletcher of Britain also claimed a Grand Prix title, winning the CSI2* 1.45m competition. This result further demonstrated the strength of British equestrian sport at the event. Meanwhile, local talent shone brightly, with Hussain Said A M Haidan leading a Qatari sweep of the CSI1* 1.30m Grand Prix.

Qatari Riders Demonstrate Growing Prowess

Haidan’s victory with D Saucedo was particularly significant, showcasing the development of equestrian skills within Qatar. He was followed by Saad Ahmed S A Al Saad and Ghanim Nasser Al Qadi, completing an all-Qatari podium. This strong showing reflects ongoing investment in equestrian programs and facilities within the country, aiming to cultivate a new generation of talented riders.

In addition to Haidan’s success, other Qatari riders also achieved podium finishes, including Faris Saad A H Al Qahtani and Abdul Aziz Jassim A J Al Thani, each winning their respective CSI2* and CSI1* classes. These results highlight the increasing competitiveness of Qatari equestrians on the international stage.

The event also featured strong performances from Italian riders, with Emanuele Gaudiano securing victory in the CSI4* 1.45m Special Two Phases, and partnering with Gaudiano to secure another win in the CSI2* 1.35m Table C. These wins add even more international flavour to the competition.

The H H The Father Amir’s Prix is considered a crucial stepping stone as Qatar prepares to host major international equestrian events in the coming years. The facility’s successful hosting of this tournament solidifies its reputation and readiness for larger competitions, further solidifying Qatar’s dedication to show jumping and equestrian sports in general. The competition took place under windy conditions, adding an extra element of challenge for riders and horses.

Looking ahead, the second Tour of H H The Father Amir’s Prix is scheduled to run from Thursday to Saturday. Organizers will likely assess feedback from the opening tour to refine the competition schedule and optimize the rider experience. Continued strong participation from both international and Qatari riders is anticipated, and observers will be watching for any adjustments to course design or event logistics.
