Chaos caused by motorcycles disrupts Muharraq’s Old Market

Residents and officials in Muharraq are calling for tighter enforcement of traffic laws to curb the chaos caused by unruly motorcyclists and late-night gatherings that have been plaguing the Old Market area. The noise and reckless driving behaviors exhibited by expat workers have become a major source of frustration for locals, prompting calls for action to be taken.

One proposed solution is the imposition of parking fees and an improvement in drivers’ conduct. Councilor Ahmed Al Moqahwi has suggested setting aside specific land for delivery motorbikes, particularly in residential areas and around the congested old market. A meeting with a food delivery company also resulted in an agreement to educate drivers on traffic laws and discourage gatherings near residential areas. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture has been urged to establish designated zones for delivery drivers at the expense of the companies.

In addition to addressing the traffic issues, Al Moqahwi has put forward a plan to repurpose unused municipal lands into attractions for the community. Suggestions include building a model cricket ground, an entertainment park, and even Muharraq’s first public swimming pool to provide relief from the summer heat and boost the area’s appeal to visitors. These unused plots, some of which have been vacant for decades, offer a new opportunity for investment and community enjoyment.

Councilor Abdulqader Al Sayed has also raised the issue of introducing digital payment options at the Grand Muharraq Park to accommodate residents’ requests for easier parking payment methods. This move would make it more convenient for visitors to access the park and contribute to improving overall traffic management in the area. The push for modernizing payment systems reflects a broader effort to enhance convenience and efficiency in local services.

Overall, stricter enforcement of traffic laws and the implementation of targeted solutions such as designated parking areas for delivery drivers are seen as crucial steps towards restoring order in the Old Market area of Muharraq. By addressing the underlying issues of noise pollution and reckless driving behaviors, residents hope to create a safer and more peaceful environment for all. The proposal to repurpose idle municipal lands into recreational attractions not only offers a creative solution to land use challenges but also holds the potential for stimulating economic development and community engagement. With concerted efforts from local officials and residents, the vision of a revitalized and thriving Muharraq is within reach.
