Doha, Qatar – Residents of Doha and surrounding areas experienced scattered showers early this morning, December 14, 2025, as unsettled weather continues to affect the region. The rain in Qatar is forecast to persist intermittently through Friday morning, December 19, 2025, due to an extended upper-level trough associated with a low-pressure system. The Qatar Meteorology Department has issued warnings for both land and marine activities.

The showers, which began in various parts of the city, are expected to be accompanied by cloudy skies and potentially strong winds, leading to reduced visibility. The current weather pattern is impacting daily life and prompting caution from authorities regarding outdoor and sea-based activities. The Ministry of Interior has not yet issued specific advisories, but residents are encouraged to stay informed.

Extended Period of Unsettled Weather and Rainfall in Qatar

According to the Qatar Meteorology Department, the low-pressure system extending over the region is the primary driver of the current conditions. This system is characterized by an upper-level trough, which is a prolonged area of low pressure that encourages cloud formation and precipitation. The forecast indicates that this trough will remain influential for several days.

The chances of scattered showers will continue throughout the week, with the possibility of thunderstorms developing in some locations. These thunderstorms could be locally intense, bringing heavier rainfall and stronger gusts of wind. The variability in intensity means some areas may receive significant downpours while others experience only light drizzle.

Marine Warnings and Safety Precautions

A marine warning remains in effect, highlighting the risks associated with strong winds and high seas during periods of thundery rain. The Meteorology Department strongly advises the public to avoid all marine activities, including fishing, boating, and swimming, until the warning is lifted. These conditions pose a significant threat to maritime safety.

The combination of strong winds and high waves can make navigation extremely dangerous, and the risk of capsizing or other accidents is elevated. Additionally, lightning strikes associated with thunderstorms present a direct hazard to those at sea. The department urges individuals to monitor official channels for updates.

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure

The ongoing weather in Doha is expected to cause some disruption to daily routines. Reduced visibility due to rain and wind may affect traffic conditions, and commuters are advised to exercise caution while driving. The potential for localized flooding also exists, particularly in low-lying areas.

However, Qatar’s infrastructure is generally well-prepared for rainfall events. The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has invested heavily in drainage systems to mitigate the risk of flooding. Nevertheless, residents should remain vigilant and avoid areas prone to water accumulation. The recent investments in infrastructure are expected to minimize major disruptions.

The current weather situation is not unusual for Qatar during this time of year. The country typically experiences a period of unsettled weather in December and January as cooler air masses interact with warmer, moist air from the Arabian Gulf. This often results in intermittent rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. The Qatar climate is known for its seasonal shifts.

Looking ahead, the Meteorology Department anticipates that the upper-level trough will gradually weaken beyond Friday morning. However, the forecast remains subject to change, and the possibility of further showers cannot be ruled out. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official weather updates from the Qatar Meteorology Department through their website and social media channels for the latest information and potential adjustments to the forecast.
