Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) inaugurated the Middle East’s first and largest new energy aftermarket facility outside of China in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. The NING SERVICE Experience Center will provide comprehensive support for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage systems, bolstering CATL’s presence in the region as it rapidly expands its electric infrastructure. This launch aligns with ambitious regional goals to reduce carbon emissions and diversify energy sources.
The opening of the Riyadh center comes as Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern nations accelerate their transition to sustainable energy, driven by initiatives like Saudi Vision 2030. These plans include significant investments in renewable energy and a push to electrify transportation and industrial sectors. However, challenges remain, including a reliance on fossil fuels and the need for extensive charging and service networks.
CATL Strengthens Electric Vehicle Aftermarket Support in the Middle East
CATL’s new facility is strategically positioned to address these challenges by offering a full range of services throughout the lifecycle of new energy products. This includes diagnostics, repair, maintenance, refurbishment, and recycling of batteries used in passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as large-scale energy storage systems. The company aims to reduce downtime and lower maintenance costs for its customers.
The 7,000-square-meter center features exhibition areas, advanced diagnostic equipment, and dedicated training spaces. It’s designed not only as a service hub but also as a platform to foster collaboration and synergy within the growing regional ecosystem of electric mobility and energy storage. This holistic approach is crucial for building confidence in EV technology and accelerating its adoption.
Full Lifecycle Services for Battery Systems
NING SERVICE provides a comprehensive suite of services, encompassing everything from initial battery diagnostics to end-of-life recycling. This includes repair and maintenance for a wide variety of applications, spanning passenger vehicles, commercial fleets, and stationary energy storage solutions. According to CATL, this sets a new standard for aftermarket service in the region.
The availability of localized repair expertise is expected to significantly reduce costs and improve the reliability of electric assets. Enterprise customers will benefit from minimized downtime and extended asset lifespans, contributing to a lower total cost of ownership for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. This is a key factor in overcoming barriers to wider adoption.
Investing in Local Talent and Partnerships
Beyond service provision, the Riyadh center represents a significant investment in local capability building. CATL is establishing training programs to develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting the expanding new energy sector. Globally, NING SERVICE has already certified over 9,700 professionals through partnerships with vocational institutions.
CATL is actively pursuing partnerships with local industry leaders to accelerate the deployment of electric solutions. Discussions are underway with fuel network operators to integrate charging infrastructure into existing gas stations and with infrastructure companies to electrify their vehicle fleets. Additionally, the company is collaborating with energy firms on solar-plus-storage projects, a growing area of interest in the region.
Ahmed Ibrahim, Assistant General Manager For Procurement at Al Drees, a Saudi Arabian petroleum and logistics provider, stated the company sees “tremendous opportunities in energy transformation” and plans to deploy solar-plus-storage solutions and electrify forklifts. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with CATL to achieve these goals.
The expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure in the Middle East is also driving demand for energy storage solutions. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind necessitates robust storage capabilities to ensure grid stability and reliable power supply. CATL’s expertise in battery technology positions it as a key player in this emerging market.
Looking ahead, CATL plans to continue expanding its localized operations and strengthening its partnerships throughout the Middle East. The success of the Riyadh center will likely serve as a model for future facilities in the region. The pace of this expansion, and the level of investment from both public and private sectors, will be critical factors in determining the speed of the region’s transition to a cleaner energy future. Further developments in government regulations and incentives for EV adoption will also be important to watch.
