India’s hospitality industry is poised for significant growth over the next three years, with a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.5 per cent, according to a report by Axis Securities. This growth is expected to generate an annual incremental demand of Rs 8,200 crore, driven by domestic travelers, foreign tourists, and the MICE segment. Currently, the hospitality industry in India consists of 212,000 rooms, with domestic travelers expected to contribute around 50 per cent of the industry’s growth.

Foreign tourist arrivals are estimated to account for 30 per cent of the incremental growth, while the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment is likely to contribute the remaining 20 per cent. The demand in the hospitality sector is outpacing the supply, with the hotel sector experiencing high demand but struggling to keep pace with supply. By 2027, the number of hotel rooms is projected to reach 241,000, up from the current 188,000, with an estimated addition of 18,000 rooms per year from 2024 to 2027.

The report highlights that the demand in the hospitality sector is not just limited to metro or Tier 1 cities, with Tier II and III cities also witnessing robust demand. Tier II and III cities are experiencing a 13 per cent annual growth in demand, while supply growth in these regions is slower at 10 per cent. Enhanced road connectivity and expanded railways are fueling growth from rural to urban areas, further boosting demand. The Indian hotel industry is strategically positioned to capitalize on these trends, contributing significantly to the tourism sector and overall economic growth.

Despite an average addition of roughly 18,000 rooms yearly, the six leading players in the listed space contribute to about 30 per cent of the total annual room increment, according to the analysis. This cautious and stable approach is due to the market size growing faster than the rate at which industry leaders are adding new rooms. The report emphasizes that these factors are expected to remain sustainable over the next three years and will significantly drive sector growth, positioning the Indian hospitality industry for further expansion and success in the coming years.
