On May 22, 2024, a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore faced heavy turbulence that left passengers and crew injured, with one person dead. The Boeing 777-300ER plane made an emergency landing in Bangkok after passengers were flung around the cabin due to the turbulence, resulting in serious injuries. A 73-year-old British passenger died from a suspected heart attack, and at least 30 others were injured. Describing the chaos onboard the plane, a 28-year-old student recalled seeing people hitting the ceiling and sustaining severe injuries.

The relief flight from Bangkok carrying 131 passengers and 12 crew members finally reached Singapore, with the injured fliers and their families remaining in Bangkok for further treatment. Singapore Airlines CEO expressed condolences to the deceased passenger’s family and stated that the airline is fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation. The Transport Safety Investigation Bureau of Singapore and the US National Transportation Safety Board are involved in determining the cause of the incident.

Flight tracking data indicated a sudden change in vertical rate during the turbulence, likely due to explosive thunderstorms in the flight path. AccuWeather experts suggested that the rapidly developing thunderstorms in the area might have contributed to the violent turbulence experienced on the flight. Despite the experience of turbulence being relatively common in certain areas, the severity of this incident highlights the importance of passengers fastening their seatbelts whenever seated.

Turbulence-related accidents are the most common among aviation incidents, with a significant number of injuries reported in such cases. Singapore Airlines, known for its safety standards, has not had any major incidents in recent years, maintaining its reputation as a leading airline in the industry. The airline shares were not trading on the day of the incident due to a public holiday in Singapore, and further investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the turbulence.

These incidents serve as a reminder for passengers to follow safety guidelines while traveling and wear seatbelts at all times, as turbulence can have unpredictable effects during flights. With the involvement of aviation authorities in the investigation, the focus is on preventing similar incidents in the future through improved safety measures and regulations. The airline industry continues to prioritize passenger safety as a top priority, aiming to minimize the risks associated with turbulence and other potential threats during flights.
