Meta, the owner of Instagram, has collaborated with Vodafone to enhance the delivery of short-form videos on 11 European mobile networks. This optimization aims to increase capacity without compromising the viewing experience for users. The demand for video content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has led to a significant increase in data usage on mobile networks. According to Ericsson’s 2024 Mobility Report, global traffic has grown by 25% in the past year, with video accounting for 73% of all mobile traffic by the end of 2023.

Telecom operators, including Vodafone, have raised concerns about bearing the costs of upgrading networks while Big Tech companies benefit without contributing financially. Despite previous attempts by the EU to make Big Tech entities contribute to 5G investments, the initiative stalled last year and is unlikely to be revived before the end of the year. In response to this issue, partnering with companies like Meta is seen as a pragmatic way for telecom operators to address the debate around fair cost-sharing. Vodafone’s chief network officer, Alberto Ripepi, commended Meta’s efforts to optimize video delivery for more efficient use of network resources.

The collaboration between Vodafone and Meta has resulted in a low double-digit reduction in Meta’s data traffic on Vodafone’s British network during a trial in April. This reduction in data traffic has allowed for increased capacity in high-traffic areas such as shopping centers and transport hubs. Vodafone and Meta plan to continue working together to enhance efficiencies in network usage. Meta’s vice president of network engineering, Gaya Nagarajan, emphasized the company’s commitment to collaborating with innovative partners, including Vodafone, device manufacturers, and equipment vendors, to push the boundaries of video optimization.

In addition to Vodafone, Spain’s Telefonica has also announced its partnership with Meta to optimize video traffic delivery on its networks. This proactive approach to enhancing video delivery efficiency highlights the increasing importance of collaboration between telecom operators and tech companies to address the growing demand for video content on mobile networks. By optimizing video delivery, companies like Meta and Vodafone can alleviate the strain on network capacity and enhance the user experience for consumers. This collaborative effort showcases the potential for innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of mobile users in an increasingly video-centric digital environment.

As mobile data usage continues to surge, telecom operators face the challenge of ensuring network capacity keeps pace with demand while managing costs effectively. Collaborating with tech companies like Meta to optimize video delivery is a strategic solution that can benefit both parties. By streamlining data traffic and enhancing network efficiency, telecom operators can accommodate the increasing demand for video content without incurring substantial costs. This partnership between Vodafone and Meta sets a positive example of how industry collaboration can drive innovation and address the challenges of digital transformation in the mobile sector. Through ongoing collaboration and optimization efforts, telecom operators and tech companies can work together to ensure a seamless and efficient mobile experience for users worldwide.
