Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently praised the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for its transformative impact on India’s e-commerce landscape. In a message shared by Union Minister Piyush Goyal on social media, PM Modi highlighted ONDC’s role in empowering small businesses and revolutionizing e-commerce. The platform has been instrumental in driving growth and inclusivity within the digital marketplace, according to the Prime Minister’s remarks.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal outlined the government’s vision for ONDC, emphasizing its accomplishments over the past three years. Launched in 2021 with the objective of democratizing e-commerce in India, ONDC has achieved significant milestones since its inception. With over 150 million transactions facilitated and more than 200 participants on the network, including sellers, buyers, and service providers, the platform has created a vibrant and competitive marketplace.

ONDC has provided small businesses with unprecedented access to a wider customer base, with 7 lakh sellers and service providers from over 600 cities and towns participating in the network. Buyers from more than 1,100 cities and towns have engaged with ONDC as well, showcasing its extensive reach and impact. The platform has also focused on empowering farmers, with over 7,000 farmer producer organizations representing 35 lakh farmers onboarded to connect directly with buyers and secure better market opportunities.

In addition to supporting farmers, ONDC has prioritized the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through initiatives like the MSME TEAM scheme. This program aims to empower five lakh SMEs, with 50% of its beneficiaries being women-owned enterprises. By supporting women entrepreneurs, ONDC is not only driving economic growth but also promoting gender equality in India’s digital commerce sector.

The success of ONDC underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a digital marketplace that is inclusive and competitive. By bridging the gap between sellers and buyers, the platform has revolutionized the e-commerce landscape in India. With a focus on empowering small businesses, farmers, and women entrepreneurs, ONDC continues to drive growth and prosperity while promoting economic development and gender equality.

Overall, the transformative impact of ONDC on India’s e-commerce sector highlights the potential of digital platforms to empower businesses and create opportunities for economic growth. With its focus on inclusivity and innovation, ONDC is setting a new standard for digital commerce in the country and paving the way for a more vibrant and competitive marketplace.
