Google parent Alphabet has recently announced the expansion of its AI-generated summaries for search queries to six new countries, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and Britain. This decision comes just two months after the company faced backlash for the feature’s problem-riddled launch. The AI Overviews, which are displayed atop search results pages before traditional links, were initially rolled out to all U.S. users in May after a year-long trial period.
The feature received criticism for providing factually inaccurate answers, such as a pizza recipe listing glue as an ingredient and a claim that former U.S. President Barack Obama is Muslim. Google acknowledged these issues and made updates to the product in late May. These updates included restrictions on the queries that display AI answers and curbing user-generated content from websites like Reddit as a source for answers. Despite the initial setbacks, Google’s senior director of product, Hema Budaraju, stated that the quality of the feature is improving based on internal data collected by Google.
In addition to expanding to new countries, Google is also adding hyperlinks to the AI-generated answers. Websites will be displayed on the right side of the answer, and the company is testing a further update that would include links directly within the text of the overview. These updates aim to address concerns from the media industry about potential loss of referral traffic from users who click through to publishers’ websites. Budaraju mentioned that the new updates would have a “three-way benefit” for Google, consumers, and publishers.
The recent announcement comes amid legal challenges for Google, as a U.S. judge ruled the company to have an illegal monopoly on search, paving the way for a trial that could result in the breakup of Alphabet. Furthermore, AI advancements from competitors like Microsoft-backed OpenAI pose a significant threat to Google’s dominance in the search market. Despite these challenges, Google continues to invest in improving its AI-generated summaries feature and expanding its reach to new countries in local languages including Hindi and Portuguese.
Overall, Google’s AI Overviews feature has evolved from its problematic launch to becoming a useful tool for users worldwide. With ongoing updates and improvements, the feature aims to provide more accurate and helpful information to users while also benefiting publishers and Google itself. As search engines continue to rely on AI technologies for enhanced user experiences, Google remains at the forefront of innovation in the search industry.
