The Sultanate of Oman experienced a modest increase in its ATM network in 2023, with approximately 40 new machines added nationwide, bringing the total number of ATMs in the country to 1417. Despite the rise of digital banking channels, ATMs remain a crucial part of Oman’s banking infrastructure, providing essential access to cash and financial services. The 2023 Central Bank of Oman (CBO) National Payments System Annual Report revealed that Muscat leads in ATM availability with 565 machines, followed by Al Batinah North, Al Dakhiliyah, and Dhofar with significant ATM installations.

While traditional banking services like ATMs are still vital for many Omanis, there is a noticeable trend towards adopting digital banking channels such as mobile and online banking. These options offer greater convenience and flexibility, indicating a gradual shift in consumer preferences. The increase in ATMs reflects the ongoing demand for accessible cash withdrawal services, especially in economically active regions. However, financial institutions are also investing in digital banking infrastructure to cater to tech-savvy consumers.

The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) and financial institutions are actively collaborating to improve banking services and promote financial inclusion across all regions of Oman. Initiatives include raising awareness about the benefits of digital banking, enhancing financial literacy, and ensuring that the banking system can adapt to the needs of diverse communities. As Oman moves towards a more digital economy, ATMs will continue to play a crucial role in providing access to traditional banking services while complementing the country’s growing emphasis on electronic financial solutions.
