South Korean police have made significant progress in combating crypto-powered drug crimes, with the recent arrest of 70 individuals in Seoul for smuggling and distributing various drugs using cryptocurrencies. The group reportedly used Telegram chat rooms to advertise their services to drug buyers, accepting payments in Bitcoin among other tokens. The police discovered that the group had been operating since September 2023, amassing over $4.3 million in profits until their arrests in June 2024.

The group of 70 individuals was found to have smuggled and distributed drugs such as methamphetamine, ketamine, and synthetic marijuana. They sourced raw materials from Vietnam and ran a makeshift laboratory in South Korea to manufacture and store the narcotics. The operation was brought to light when a citizen reported suspicious activity in an apartment complex flower bed, leading the police to a significant drug bust of 40kg worth of narcotics.

The investigation into the drug ring revealed multiple hiding places with various forms of narcotics, including cannabis resin, liquid marijuana, MDMA, LSD, and angel dust. The police also seized over $7,200 worth of Bitcoin and other proceeds from the group’s drug sales. While the police have made substantial progress in dismantling the organization, several key members, including a suspected ringleader and Telegram operator, remain at large.

South Korean media has reported a surge in drug pollution, with citizens inadvertently stumbling upon bags of drugs hidden in public places due to crypto-powered narcotics dead drops. Telegram channels have been described as a “crypto-powered narcotics department store,” catering to teens and young adults seeking nationwide delivery of illicit substances. Common South Korean narcotics argot searches on Telegram and Twitter have returned numerous results, with dealers favoring crypto payments for drug transactions.

The police crackdown on the drug distribution market marks a significant victory in halting the flow of drugs in South Korea. Despite the challenges posed by the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in the illegal drug trade, law enforcement efforts have proven effective in identifying and apprehending drug traffickers operating in the country. By leveraging tip-offs from vigilant citizens and utilizing advanced investigative techniques, the police have disrupted a major drug operation and are actively pursuing additional suspects connected to the criminal network.

As authorities continue their pursuit of the remaining suspects involved in the drug ring, the cooperation between law enforcement agencies in South Korea and international organizations like Interpol remains crucial in ensuring the apprehension of fugitive criminals. The successful dismantling of the group involved in crypto-powered drug crimes underscores the importance of vigilance and collaborative efforts in combating illicit activities enabled by digital currencies.Police Crackdown Leads to Arrest of 70 Individuals in Seoul for Crypto-powered Drug Crimes
