On a recent incident, crypto influencers on Twitter have been targeted by scammers, with one such influencer being GCR whose account was compromised. The hacker posted a prediction about the price of the ORDI token, causing a brief surge in its price. GCR confirmed the hack and urged his followers to ignore any promotional posts originating from his account. He also revealed that he was notified two months ago about potential bribes being made to gain access to his account through an X employee, indicating a possible security breach.
Following the hacker’s post, the price of the ORDI token briefly climbed from $40 to $44 before falling back to $40. Additionally, Luna 2.0 experienced a momentary surge of 274%. This incident caught the attention of several crypto observers who predicted that the hack could be part of a wider scam targeting celebrities and crypto influencers. Bitcoin developer Udi Wertheimer warned of potential risks associated with celebrities launching meme coins and urged caution.
Popular Chinese crypto blogger Colin Wu pointed out that the hacker managed to establish positions on OKX and Binance six minutes before making the posts. Another crypto analyst, Miles Deutscher, criticized the hacker for choosing to promote ORDI and Luna2 instead of more lucrative options. The incident involving GCR is not the first of its kind, as other celebrity influencers, such as American rapper Rich The Kid and media personality Caitlyn Jenner, have also fallen victim to similar hacks promoting new tokens on the Solana memecoin creation platform.
Rich The Kid’s post promoting the RICH token led to a market value of $90,000 in just two hours, while Jenner’s post about the JENNER token resulted in a market value of $4.7 million. Both influencers later deleted the posts, sparking speculations about the authenticity of the promotions. Jenner reiterated her promotion of the JENNER token, urging followers to ignore influencers discouraging them from buying it. These incidents highlight the vulnerability of social media platforms to hacking and the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to cryptocurrency investments. It is essential for influencers and users alike to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of posts and promotions before engaging in any transactions.
