Recent Cryptic Posts on Near Protocol Spark Hacking Concerns

NEAR Protocol’s official X handle recently posted a series of cryptic messages that left the crypto community puzzled and concerned about a possible hack. The unusual behavior started with a Morse code message that read “Darkness is coming,” followed by tweets with hard-to-read gothic fonts containing messages like “the sun rises in the east” and “darkness.” This led to a complete visual redesign of NEAR’s X profile, with the banner and profile picture changed to solid black, and the display name and description simply reading “dark.”

The crypto community and blockchain investigators suspect a possible hijack of NEAR’s X account due to the posts not being on-brand compared to the protocol’s past communications. While some supporters see the tweets as a sign of something bigger coming to the ecosystem, most users advise proceeding with caution. This stems from the fear that the posts may be a result of a hack launched with malicious intent, similar to the security breach experienced by CoinGecko’s X account in January 2024, which led to phishing scams being run through the account.

In an unexpected move, NEAR Foundation, the developer of NEAR Protocol, recently laid off 40% of its staff to consolidate the core Foundation team and focus on higher-impact activities. This decision resulted in over 35 employees being let go from the business development, marketing, and community teams. The Foundation stated that they are well-placed to support the growth, development, and decentralization of the NEAR Protocol and ecosystem, with further reduction in footprint planned over the next few years.

The layoffs at NEAR Foundation may have contributed to the suspected hijack of NEAR’s X account, as some of the affected departments had direct involvement in the protocol’s communications. This highlights the importance of maintaining vigilance and knowing how to protect oneself from crypto fraud and scams. As the ecosystem moves closer to true decentralization, it becomes crucial for users to be aware of the risks associated with interacting with cryptocurrencies and take necessary precautions to safeguard their assets.

The cryptic messages posted by NEAR Protocol’s X account have sparked interest and concern within the crypto community, with users speculating on the possible meanings behind them. While some see the posts as a hint towards future developments in the ecosystem, others fear a potential security breach or hack. These events underscore the need for increased security measures and awareness among cryptocurrency users, especially in light of recent incidents of social media account hijacks within the industry.

Overall, the recent activities and decisions made by NEAR Protocol and NEAR Foundation have raised questions and concerns among users and the crypto community. The cryptic messages, redesign of NEAR’s X profile, and layoffs at the Foundation have led to speculation about the security of the protocol and the motives behind these actions. As the ecosystem continues to evolve and decentralize, it is essential for users to stay informed, vigilant, and proactive in protecting their assets and personal information in the face of potential threats and risks within the cryptocurrency space.
