The Australian Federal Police (AFP) recently seized AU$9.3 million (US$6.4 million) in cryptocurrency during an investigation related to the mastermind behind Ghost, an encrypted communication platform. The arrest of 32-year-old Jay Je Yoon Jung on September 17 under “Operation Kraken” led to the confiscation of assets linked to criminal activities. With the assistance of an analytics specialist within the AFP-led task force, the seed phrase of alleged accounts was decoded, leading to the seizure of the crypto assets.

Acting Commander Raven emphasized the AFP’s commitment to identifying and restraining illicitly obtained goods, including cryptocurrencies. The assets were confiscated under the Commonwealth Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, and the Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) under the AFP transferred the funds to secure storage. The AFP aims to have the restrained assets forfeited to the Commonwealth in the future, showcasing their technical capabilities in combating organized crime.

This significant multimillion-dollar seizure is the second one linked to AFP Operation Kraken, following a previous seizure of cryptos and properties worth AU$2 million (US$1.3 million) from a Perth man. The Australian police force has been actively investigating losses from crypto phishing scams and has collaborated with blockchain data firm Chainalysis to identify compromised Australian-owned crypto wallets. Operation Spincaster, a joint effort to combat approval phishing scams, focuses on educating the public, providing tools, and training to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting cryptocurrencies.

The investigations have revealed cybercriminals’ new tactics using approval phishing scams, targeting unsuspecting Australians through popular cryptocurrency exchanges. The AFP, along with partners like BTC Markets, Binance, and Crypto.com, are working to prevent Australians from falling victim to these scams. By shedding light on these fraudulent schemes and raising awareness about cybersecurity risks, law enforcement agencies hope to protect individuals from financial losses and safeguard the integrity of the cryptocurrency market.

The successful seizure of cryptocurrency assets underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and cryptocurrency exchanges in combatting financial crimes in the digital space. By leveraging advanced analytics and technical capabilities, the AFP and its partners can track and confiscate illicitly obtained funds, disrupting the operations of criminal organizations. The outcome of Operation Kraken highlights the effectiveness of proactive enforcement measures in deterring illicit activities and safeguarding the integrity of the financial system.

As the use of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, law enforcement agencies worldwide face the challenge of adapting their investigative techniques to combat cybercrime effectively. By staying abreast of emerging trends in the crypto space and collaborating with industry experts, authorities can enhance their capabilities in tracing and seizing illicit assets. Through ongoing education, awareness campaigns, and technological advancements, law enforcement can stay ahead of cybercriminals and protect the interests of the public in the evolving landscape of digital finance.
