The aviation industry in the Middle East is experiencing significant growth, with passenger numbers expected to reach 429 million this year, a 5.4 per cent increase from 2019. At the recent Arabian Travel Market (ATM), a panel of experts discussed how the industry is evolving and shared insights into the future of air travel. The session titled “Looking Skyward for Innovation: How Technology is Disrupting Aviation” was moderated by travel expert Mark Frary and featured experts from Cirium, IATA, AviationXLab, and Riyadh Air.
According to research from IATA, international passenger traffic increased by 20 per cent in March 2024 compared to the same month last year. Kashif Khalid, Regional Director, Africa & Middle East, IATA, emphasized the importance of innovation in accommodating the industry’s growth. He highlighted the need for digital solutions and innovation to manage passengers and cargo efficiently, citing the One ID initiative as an example of how technology is transforming air travel infrastructure.
IATA One ID is a digital identity initiative that aims to streamline and enhance passenger travel by consolidating travel documents into a single digital token. This system not only simplifies check-in processes but also enhances security and facilitates seamless travel across airports. Kevin Hightower, Vice President of Product at Cirium, emphasized the importance of data sharing in increasing efficiency and meeting the increased demand in the aviation industry.
Riyadh Air, Saudi’s new national carrier launching in 2025, aims to be the first digitally native airline. Abe Dev, Vice President, Digital and Innovation at Riyadh Air, highlighted the opportunities presented by technologies like AI and cloud computing to deliver a unique technology-enabled guest experience. Riyadh Air plans to collaborate with startups to drive innovation, with Aviation X Lab serving as a key player in fostering collaboration and driving innovation in the aviation sector.

Arabian Travel Market, which concluded on 9th May, focused on the theme “Empowering Innovation – Transforming Travel through Entrepreneurship”.
