The Sohar Industrial City, under the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates, has recently signed a cooperation agreement with Middle East Calcined Clay Company to establish a factory for manufacturing the Omani “Sarooj” product. This product is used in restoration, urbanisation, and decoration. The project will cover an area of 45,000 sqm and involve an investment of OMR5.4 million. The agreement was signed by Eng. Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Mayasi and Eng. Abdulaziz bin Said Al Maqbali, with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

The establishment of this factory is part of an innovation project in the mining sector, focusing on utilising Omani natural resources to develop high-quality products. The Industrial Innovation Academy has played a crucial role in conducting research and market analyses, as well as practical experiments to ensure the product’s efficiency for commercial production. This development aligns with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s goals of preserving historical sites using sustainable and locally sourced materials.

Yahya bin Ahmed Al Kharoosi, the Director of Local Content and Business Opportunities at the Industrial Innovation Academy, highlighted the importance of the “Sarooj” product in enhancing the value of Omani resources. By investing in research and development and adhering to global standards, local companies can produce marketable products efficiently. The academy’s contribution to developing the product for restoration purposes demonstrates its commitment to supporting sustainable practices and empowering businesses in the sector.

Eng. Abdulaziz bin Said Al Maqbali, Project Manager at Middle East Calcined Clay Company, emphasized the strategic significance of this cooperation in competing in the international clay and construction materials markets. The factory will feature two production lines with an annual capacity of around 250,000 tons and will incorporate energy-saving technologies and automated processes. With a modern laboratory for quality testing, the factory is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2025, providing job opportunities for local citizens and contributing to the National Zero Neutrality Programme’s objectives by reducing carbon emissions.

Overall, the partnership between Sohar Industrial City and Middle East Calcined Clay Company signifies a significant step towards sustainable development in Oman’s mining and construction sectors. By utilizing local resources to produce high-quality materials for restoration projects, the collaboration aims to promote economic growth, create employment opportunities, and contribute to environmental conservation efforts. The factory’s innovative approach to manufacturing the “Sarooj” product underscores the importance of research, technology, and collaboration in advancing the country’s industrial capabilities. As the project moves forward, it is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy and position Oman as a leader in the production of sustainable construction materials.
