The dream of LeBron James playing in the NBA alongside one of his sons is now a step closer to reality, as Bronny James, his oldest son, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. The 19-year-old guard was taken with the No. 55 overall pick, with only three picks remaining in this year’s draft. This move adds further intrigue as LeBron James can become a free agent next week, potentially leaving the Lakers.

While the draft move does not guarantee that father and son will play in a game together, it raises the possibility of an NBA first – a father-son duo playing in the league at the same time. This unique opportunity is made possible due to LeBron James’ incredible longevity in the league, as he prepares to enter his 22nd season. The announcement of the pick by NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum made the moment official for Bronny James, who had a successful college basketball career at USC.

Bronny James had to overcome health challenges, including a congenital heart defect discovered after he went into cardiac arrest during a summer workout. A panel of doctors recently cleared him for NBA play, paving the way for his draft selection. While he may be one of the shortest players in the NBA at 6 feet 1 1/2 inches, his athleticism and defensive skills have earned him a spot with the Lakers.

The attention around the No. 55 pick in the NBA draft is rarely significant, with past selections not making a major impact in the league. The best No. 55 pick in history is Patty Mills, who has had a successful 15-season career. Despite the lack of notable players selected at this spot, Bronny James’ draft pick captured a lot of attention due to the potential of playing alongside his father in the NBA.

As other players were selected before Bronny James on Day 2 of the draft, the spotlight remained on him as a unique father-son duo possibility in the league. While his NBA career is just beginning, the opportunity to play with his father LeBron James would be a historic and unprecedented moment in NBA history. Whether they will share the court together remains to be seen, but the potential for this scenario has basketball fans intrigued and excited for the future.
