Brighton’s Brazilian striker Joao Pedro secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester United with a 95th minute header in a thrilling Premier League clash. The win gave 31-year-old Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler a dream home debut. United equalized through Amad Diallo after Danny Welbeck’s first-half goal, but a VAR review ruled out a potential winner for United. Instead, Pedro scored the late winner for Brighton, leaving United boss Erik ten Hag under pressure ahead of a challenging fixture against Liverpool.

Despite a 1-0 win over Fulham in their opening game, United’s performances under Ten Hag have not been convincing, continuing the struggles from the previous season. The Dutch manager opted to stick with his starting XI from the Fulham game, but Brighton’s strong attacking display exposed defensive vulnerabilities in the United team. With bright prospects for European qualification, Brighton’s victory solidified their ambitions under Hurzeler, who started his tenure with an impressive 3-0 win over Everton.

Brighton’s opener came through Welbeck after a defensive error from Harry Maguire, with Marcus Rashford denied an equalizer due to an offside call. The Seagulls dominated the second half but failed to convert their chances, allowing United to claw back into the game through Diallo’s deflected strike. However, a disallowed goal for United due to a Zirkzee offside proved crucial as Pedro’s header secured the dramatic victory for Brighton, raising doubts about United’s defensive solidity and Ten Hag’s reign at the club.

The result highlighted United’s defensive frailties as Pedro found space easily to score the late winner, leaving questions about the team’s organization at the back. With Liverpool up next, United must address their defensive issues to compete with the top teams in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Brighton’s impressive start to the season under Hurzeler indicates their intent to challenge for European qualification, with Pedro proving to be a key player for the team with his crucial goal against United.

The intense battle between the two teams showcased the competitive nature of the Premier League, with Brighton’s attacking flair contrasting with United’s defensive lapses. Both managers will have plenty to analyze and work on in training ahead of their upcoming fixtures, as they aim to achieve their respective goals for the season. The thrilling encounter at the American Express Community Stadium will be remembered for Pedro’s heroics and the high stakes involved for both teams in the early stages of the Premier League campaign.
