The US State Department is preparing to hold talks in Brussels to discuss ways to increase support for Ukraine before Trump takes over in the transition of power. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be meeting with EU and NATO officials to address the situation in Ukraine, given Trump’s impending return to the White House. Trump has indicated in the past his intention to reduce US military aid to Kyiv, as part of a broader “America first” approach to foreign policy. During a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the US in September, Trump criticized the country’s state and suggested they should have made concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin before the invasion.

In his first term, Trump provided Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles, which were crucial in their defense against Russia’s invasion in 2022. However, he has not detailed specific plans for ending the war in Ukraine. In a debate with his election opponent, Kamala Harris, Trump expressed his desire for the war to end but did not provide clear answers on how he planned to achieve this. The US has been the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine, with contributions amounting to €84.7 billion between 2022 and 2024. While current US President Joe Biden has maintained his support for Ukraine, he has not fully endorsed Zelenskyy’s “victory plan”.

The US is currently in a lame-duck session, which occurs between Election Day and the end of the two-year congressional term. Democrats are working to implement their priorities before Republicans take full control of the White House in the coming year. Biden’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine to prevent instability in Europe. As the transition of power approaches, the focus is on ensuring that Ukraine receives the necessary assistance and backing to address the ongoing conflict.

The upcoming talks in Brussels will likely center on strategies to strengthen support for Ukraine amid potential changes in US foreign policy. Blinken’s discussions with EU and NATO officials will be critical in determining the next steps in addressing the situation in Ukraine. With Trump’s return to the White House looming, there is uncertainty surrounding the future of US military aid to Kyiv. The outcome of these talks will be crucial in shaping how the international community responds to the conflict in Ukraine and supports efforts to achieve peace in the region.

As the US navigates a period of transition in leadership, the importance of maintaining support for Ukraine remains a key priority. The ongoing conflict in the region underscores the need for a coordinated approach by the US and its allies to address the humanitarian and security challenges facing Ukraine. The talks in Brussels present an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also exploring ways to de-escalate tensions and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. By working together, the US and its partners can play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine and promoting stability in the region.
