Australian sprinter Bella Nipotina, ridden by jockey Craig Williams, made history by becoming the first mare to win The Everest, the world’s richest turf race held at the Royal Randwick race course in Sydney. Bella Nipotina, trained by Ciaron Maher, stormed through the field in the final 100 meters to claim the massive Aus$7.0 million prize money in a thrilling one-minute dash. Giga Kick, the 2022 champion, finished second while Growing Empire came in third.

Jockey Craig Williams expressed his excitement over the victory, highlighting the hard work and dedication that goes into such a significant win. Williams, who also rode Giga Kick to victory in 2022, credited Bella Nipotina’s performance and Maher’s strategic guidance for the success. Despite hoping for more rain, the track conditions suited Bella Nipotina well, allowing her to showcase her exceptional talent in the prestigious race. Williams emphasized the importance of trust and positivity in their approach to the race.

The Everest, a 1,200-meter sprint race, brought together 12 elite sprinters under weight-for-age conditions. The event was elevated to Group 1 status for the first time this year, adding to its prestige and importance on the racing calendar. Trainer Ciaron Maher praised Bella Nipotina’s exceptional form and versatility, noting her consistent performance regardless of the starting gate or track conditions. The mare’s longevity and competitive spirit have solidified her status as one of the top contenders in the racing world.

The concept of The Everest revolves around innovative slot-buying, where buyers purchase a slot in the race for Aus$700,000 and then negotiate deals with owners and jockeys to secure the best horses for the event. This unique model ensures a competitive field of top-notch competitors and allows for the equitable distribution of prize money among participants. The race’s lucrative winnings surpass those of renowned events like the Melbourne Cup, Kentucky Derby, and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, making it a highly coveted title for owners, trainers, and jockeys alike.

Despite facing stiff competition from top contenders like Joliestar and Storm Boy, Bella Nipotina’s exceptional performance and strategic racing tactics ultimately led to her historic victory in The Everest. Trainer Ciaron Maher expressed his admiration for the mare’s training and racing abilities, highlighting her elite status as a consistent performer over the years. The race’s status as the world’s richest turf event, second only to the Saudi Cup, further elevates its significance in the horse racing community and attracts top talents from around the globe.

Overall, Bella Nipotina’s triumph in The Everest 2024 showcased the skill, determination, and teamwork required to achieve success in the competitive world of horse racing. Jockey Craig Williams, trainer Ciaron Maher, and the entire team behind Bella Nipotina’s training and preparation can celebrate a well-deserved victory that will go down in history as a milestone moment for the talented mare and all those involved in her remarkable journey to glory on the racetrack.
