Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is the biggest challenger of President Alexander Lukashenko and continues her fight for a free Belarus from exile. Tsikhanouskaya had to flee Belarus after Lukashenko rigged the 2020 presidential elections in his favor, abandoning everything she knew and loved. Since then, she has been working on building strong relationships with political leaders from Western countries to push for a democratic transition in Belarus. Tsikhanouskaya’s visit to Germany is seen as a crucial step in gaining support for a free Belarus.

Despite facing significant sanctions and pressure both internally and externally, Lukashenko continues his repressive regime in Belarus. Tsikhanouskaya believes that negotiating with Lukashenko will only lead to more misery for the Belarusian people, especially for the political prisoners languishing in jail. She urges democratic partners not to make deals with Lukashenko, as it only enables him to detain more innocent people in exchange for the release of a few. Tsikhanouskaya is adamant that Lukashenko’s tactics are neither humane nor fair.

Looking ahead to the 2025 presidential elections in Belarus, Tsikhanouskaya believes that it is not yet the right time for the opposition to challenge Lukashenko directly. With most opposition leaders either in prison or exile, and civil society organizations crippled, the environment is not conducive for a fair and free election. However, she notes that Lukashenko’s grip on power is weakening as more Belarusians are turning against his regime, especially in the face of escalating repression and conflict with Russia in neighboring Ukraine.

While preparing for a future moment of opportunity in Belarus, Tsikhanouskaya is also lending her support to the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russian aggression. She emphasizes the importance of cooperation between Belarusians and Ukrainians, who face similar challenges and share common goals. Despite recent changes in Poland’s asylum policies affecting Belarusian refugees, Tsikhanouskaya expresses gratitude for the country’s support over the years and aims to engage with Polish authorities to understand the implications of the policy shift.

Tsikhanouskaya’s days in exile are filled with memories of her home country, family, and childhood. Despite the challenges she faces in her fight for a free Belarus, she remains resolute in her determination to see her country liberated from oppression. Every day, she wakes up and goes to bed with thoughts of her loved ones and the memories of a life she once knew, longing for the day when Belarus will be truly free. Tsikhanouskaya’s unwavering commitment to her cause and her tireless efforts to mobilize international support highlight her dedication to the struggle for democracy and freedom in Belarus.
