Bahrain is actively investing in its infrastructure to support its growing population and ensure a sustainable future. A key component of this development is the modernization of its wastewater management systems. Recent progress on a significant project, the main transmission line for treated wastewater from Hamad Town to the Buri area, was reviewed during a field visit by Eng. Fathi Abdullah Al-Faree, Assistant Undersecretary for Sanitation at the Ministry of Works. This project represents a substantial commitment to improving public health and environmental standards across the Kingdom.

Wastewater Infrastructure Development in Bahrain: Hamad Town to Buri Project Update

The Ministry of Works is making significant strides in enhancing Bahrain’s essential infrastructure, and the Hamad Town to Buri wastewater transmission line is a prime example. Eng. Al-Faree’s visit, accompanied by a team of ministry engineers, confirmed that the project is currently 36% complete and on track. This ongoing development is crucial for accommodating the country’s rapid urbanization and the increasing demands on its sanitation networks.

The project isn’t simply about adding capacity; it’s about building a more resilient and efficient system. Modernizing sewage networks is a priority for the government, ensuring a healthy and safe environment for all citizens and residents.

Project Details: Tunneling and Pumping Capacity

The scope of the project is considerable, involving a complex network of pipelines constructed using advanced techniques. A 1,200 mm diameter pipeline is being installed over a 783-meter stretch utilizing tunneling technology. This method minimizes surface disruption, a key consideration in populated areas.

Here’s a breakdown of the pipeline components:

  • 600 mm high-pressure pipelines spanning 239 meters
  • 900 mm pipeline extending 1,012 meters
  • 900 mm main sewer line covering 90 meters – also constructed via tunneling.

Additionally, a vital pumping station is being established with an impressive capacity of 700 liters per second. This station will be instrumental in efficiently transferring the treated wastewater, supporting the overall effectiveness of the wastewater treatment process. The use of high-capacity pumps is a modern approach to managing increasing volumes.

Addressing Traffic Disruptions During Construction

Eng. Al-Faree acknowledged that the nature of the fieldwork necessitates temporary traffic diversions in certain areas. These diversions are not implemented haphazardly, but rather follow a meticulously planned scheme designed to minimize inconvenience to commuters.

He emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging all citizens and residents to pay close attention to warning signs, guidance boards, and approved diversion routes. Prioritizing the safety of both road users and the construction workers involved is paramount. The Ministry understands the frustration caused by traffic changes and is working diligently to keep disruptions to a minimum.

Effective communication regarding these diversions is a key part of the project management strategy. Regular updates will be provided to ensure a smooth flow of traffic during the construction phase.

Investment and Future Benefits of Improved Sanitation

The project’s tender was awarded to Abdulhadi Al Afoo Company (W.L.L.) by the Tender Board, with a total investment of BD 3,574,000. This significant financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication to upgrading Bahrain’s infrastructure.

The benefits of this improved sanitation infrastructure extend far beyond simply handling wastewater. A robust system contributes to:

  • Public Health: Reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Environmental Protection: Minimizing pollution and safeguarding marine ecosystems.
  • Sustainable Development: Supporting the long-term growth and prosperity of the Kingdom.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Providing reliable and efficient services to residents.

The expansion of the wastewater network will also facilitate future development projects, ensuring that new areas have access to essential sanitation services. This proactive approach to infrastructure planning is vital for Bahrain’s continued progress.

Looking Ahead: A More Sustainable Bahrain

The Hamad Town to Buri wastewater transmission line project is a crucial step towards a more sustainable and resilient Bahrain. By investing in modern infrastructure and employing advanced construction techniques, the Ministry of Works is demonstrating its commitment to providing high-quality services to its citizens and protecting the environment.

Continued monitoring of the project’s progress and proactive communication with the public will be essential for its successful completion. This project serves as a model for future infrastructure developments, highlighting the importance of careful planning, efficient execution, and a dedication to public safety and environmental responsibility. The ongoing improvements to Bahrain’s wastewater systems are a testament to the nation’s vision for a brighter, healthier future.
