As the year 2024 comes to a close, Qatar has had a remarkable showing in the sporting world. Mutaz Barshim made history by becoming the first athlete to win four Olympic medals in the high jump. Qatar’s athletes made their presence felt at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, with Barshim and Shahad Mohammed leading the delegation at the opening ceremony. Barshim had a standout year leading up to the Games, winning the ‘What Gravity Challenge’ at the Katara Amphitheatre. On the racetrack, Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah clinched his third consecutive World Rally-Raid Championship title, while Abdulaziz Al Kuwari was crowned as the Middle East Rally Champion at the 2024 FIA Awards Ceremony. Qatar’s sports achievements in 2024 are a testament to the country’s growing talent and determination in the world of sports.

In addition to Mutaz Barshim’s historic achievement at the Paris games, Qatar’s athletes had a strong showing across various sports. Ammar Ismail delivered a career-best performance in the 400-meter dash, earning his qualification for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. Abderrahman Samba also advanced to his second consecutive Olympic 400 metres hurdles final. Qatar’s beach volleyball duo of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan showcased their talent by winning silver at the Joao Pessoa Elite16 tournament in Brazil and bronze at the Beach Pro Tour Finals in Doha. Fares Ibrahim continued his winning streak in weightlifting, securing multiple medals at international events.

Qatar’s shooters also made their mark on the global stage in 2024. Rashid Saleh Al Athba and Saeed Abu Sharab secured Olympic qualifications through exceptional performances at international events. Al Athba competed in the skeet shooting event at the Paris Games, adding to his impressive resume of accomplishments in the sport. Meanwhile, Qatar’s handball team continued their dominance by securing their 6th consecutive Asian Men’s Championship title in January. The team, coached by Valero Rivera, defeated Japan in the final to solidify their position as Asia’s top handball team.

At the end of the season Sports Excellence Awards, Mutaz Barshim was named Male Athlete of the Year, while shooter Amal Mohammed Mahmoud was awarded Female Athlete of the Season. Qatar’s success in sports in 2024 is a testament to the country’s commitment to developing and supporting its athletes. With unwavering support from the country’s leadership, Qatar looks forward to 2025 with renewed hopes and aspirations for continued success in the world of sports. As another year of sport dawns, all eyes will be on Qatar’s growing talent as they aim to shine brighter than ever on the global stage.
