Doha, Qatar – Barq Al Atam, owned by Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, secured a narrow victory in the prestigious Lehwaila Cup at the Al Uqda Racecourse yesterday. The seven-year-old gelding, trained by Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki and ridden by Arnaud De Lepine, finished a head ahead of Ghafan in the Local Thoroughbred Handicap, marking a return to form for the seasoned racer. The event was presented by Rashid Saed Adiba, Head of QREC Racing Operations Section.

The Lehwaila Cup, a 1200m Class 3 handicap, featured eight runners vying for the top prize. This win for Barq Al Atam follows several consistent performances and highlights the ongoing commitment to Thoroughbred racing within Qatar. The race took place at the Al Uqda Racecourse, a modern facility dedicated to equestrian sports in the region.

Barq Al Atam Claims Thrilling Lehwaila Cup Victory

Barq Al Atam demonstrated a strong early pace, quickly establishing a leading position after a sharp break. He briefly relinquished the lead to Doghan before confidently regaining control and setting a demanding tempo throughout much of the race. This proactive approach proved crucial in the final stretch.

As the field approached the home turn, Ghafan began a determined move, steadily gaining ground and challenging for second place. The two horses entered the final furlong neck and neck, intensifying the competition for the Lehwaila Cup.

A Close Finish

Ghafan, under the guidance of Pierre Charles Boudot, briefly surged ahead inside the last 150 meters, appearing poised to take the lead. However, Barq Al Atam responded with remarkable resilience, digging deep to rally in the closing strides.

In a dramatic finish, Barq Al Atam thrust his head forward just as they crossed the finish line, securing a hard-fought victory by a mere head. The close margin underscored the competitive nature of the race and the determination of both horses.

Mutamarrid, representing Injaaz Stud and trained by Jihad El Ahmad, finished a respectable third, staying on well from midfield. The performance of Mutamarrid adds to the growing depth of talent in Qatari horse racing.

The presentation of trophies was conducted by Rashid Saed Adiba, Head of QREC Racing Operations Section, recognizing the achievements of the winning connections. This event is a key part of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) calendar, promoting local equestrian talent and attracting enthusiasts of Thoroughbred racing.

According to QREC officials, the Al Uqda Racecourse continues to be a vital hub for racing activities in Qatar, offering a state-of-the-art venue for both local and international competitions. The club aims to further develop the sport and enhance its appeal to a wider audience.

Looking ahead, QREC is expected to announce the schedule for upcoming races at Al Uqda Racecourse in the coming weeks. The focus will likely remain on developing local talent and providing opportunities for owners, trainers, and jockeys to showcase their skills. The performance of young horses in events like the Lehwaila Cup will be closely monitored as indicators of future success in Qatari racing.

The next major event on the Qatari racing calendar is anticipated to be announced shortly, with potential dates in late January or early February. Observers will be watching to see if Barq Al Atam continues his winning streak and if Ghafan can avenge his narrow defeat in future contests.
