Former captain Faruque Ahmed has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following the resignation of Nazmul Hassan, a close associate of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Faruque’s appointment comes at a time when the sport of cricket in Bangladesh is deeply intertwined with political turmoil, affecting its governance and administration.

Nazmul, who previously served as sports minister during Hasina’s autocratic rule, stepped down from his position as president and his resignation was accepted by the BCB. This move comes in the aftermath of a period of unrest in the country, where over 450 people lost their lives during student-led protests against Hasina’s government, leading to her resignation and departure from Bangladesh.

The election of Faruque Ahmed as the new BCB president was made by the board’s directors, and he assumed his role immediately after the decision. Previously, Nazmul had been serving as the president since 2012 and was set to continue until 2025. Faruque brings with him a wealth of experience, having briefly captained the Bangladesh cricket team in the 1994 ICC Trophy and representing the country in seven one-day internationals before retiring post-World Cup 1999.

In addition to his playing career, Faruque also served as the national chief selector from 2005 to 2014, demonstrating his understanding and knowledge of the sport at both administrative and operational levels. His appointment signals a new era for the BCB, which is looking to move forward after a period of instability and political influence within the organization. Faruque’s leadership and expertise are expected to bring stability and progress to the governance of cricket in Bangladesh.

Cricket in Bangladesh has long been synonymous with politics, with various government officials and leaders exerting influence and control over the sport. The appointment of Faruque Ahmed as the new BCB president marks a shift towards a more stable and independent governing body, free from political interference, allowing the sport to thrive and grow in the country. With his experience and background in cricket administration, Faruque is well-equipped to steer the BCB in the right direction and lead it towards a brighter future.

As the new president, Faruque will be tasked with addressing the challenges and issues facing Bangladeshi cricket, including enhancing the domestic structure, improving player development, and promoting the sport at grassroots levels. His vision and leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of cricket in Bangladesh, ensuring it remains competitive and successful on the global stage. With a renewed focus on cricketing excellence and professionalism, Faruque Ahmed’s presidency promises to usher in a new era of growth and success for the sport in the country.
