The Ministry of Labour in Bahrain has announced the enforcement of the 2024 midday work ban, which prohibits outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12pm and 4pm from July 1st to August 31st. The aim of this initiative is to protect the health and safety of workers during the hottest months of the year. Labour Minister Jameel bin Mohammed Humaidan highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to promoting occupational safety and health by implementing regulations such as the midday work ban. He emphasized the positive outcomes of the ban, including improved productivity levels and the prevention of heat-related illnesses and accidents.

Humaidan stressed the importance of raising awareness among companies and workers about summer illnesses and heat stress prevention. The government is providing comprehensive healthcare, first aid, and technical solutions to minimize heat and humidity exposure. The Minister noted that the midday work ban aligns with Bahrain’s commitment to upholding workers’ rights, particularly the right to a safe and healthy work environment as per international labour standards. He acknowledged the positive impact of the ban in reducing work-related injuries and enhancing productivity through work schedule adjustments.

The Ministry of Labour has launched an awareness campaign targeting employers and workers, providing informative brochures and leaflets in multiple languages. These materials explain the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures, outline preventive measures against summer illnesses and occupational accidents, and highlight the requirements for ensuring safe working conditions during the summer months. The Ministerial Decree on the Midday Work Ban stipulates penalties for non-compliance as outlined in Article 192 of Law No. 36 of 2012 concerning the issuance of the Labour Law in the Private Sector. Violators face imprisonment for up to three months and/or fines ranging from 500 to 1,000 Bahraini Dinars.

The enforcement of the midday work ban demonstrates Bahrain’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of workers and promoting a safe work environment. By implementing this regulation, the government aims to protect workers from heat-related illnesses and accidents, improve productivity levels, and uphold international labour standards. Employers and workers are urged to comply with the ban and take necessary precautions to prevent heat stress and ensure worker safety. The proactive awareness campaign launched by the Ministry of Labour aims to educate stakeholders about the risks associated with working in high temperatures and provide guidance on preventive measures to mitigate these risks.

Overall, the enforcement of the midday work ban in Bahrain is a significant step towards prioritizing the health and safety of workers, especially during the hottest months of the year. By raising awareness, providing healthcare resources, and implementing penalties for non-compliance, the government is sending a clear message about the importance of occupational safety and the well-being of workers. Companies and individuals are encouraged to cooperate with the regulations and take necessary measures to protect themselves and others from the risks of working in extreme heat conditions. The midday work ban serves as a crucial measure in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all workers in Bahrain.
