Bahrain is setting a leading example in regulating artificial intelligence (AI) with a new proposed law that aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for the technology. Ali Al Shahabi, a member of the Shura Council, emphasized the importance of this legislation in a recent interview, highlighting the need for countries to implement effective AI regulations. The proposed law advocates for a dedicated unit to oversee AI development, protect investors, and ensure the safety of individuals, while also addressing concerns about potential job displacement.

Al Shahabi reassured the public that AI will not eliminate human roles entirely but will instead transform the nature of jobs and work processes. The proposed law recognizes the importance of human involvement in decision-making and prohibits AI from replacing humans in critical areas. It also aims to monitor AI developers and programmers to prevent the development of harmful technologies, establishing a robust framework for responsible AI development.

The proposed law also focuses on protecting children in the digital age, utilizing AI to filter harmful content and detect potential online dangers such as bullying and sexual exploitation attempts. By creating a safer online environment for children, Bahrain aims to ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically to benefit society. The legislation includes provisions to address these concerns and leverage AI for the protection of vulnerable individuals.

In addition to safeguarding human roles and protecting children, the proposed law aims to regulate AI technologies, prioritize privacy protection, uphold human rights, encourage innovation, and prohibit harmful applications of AI. By establishing a dedicated AI unit with specific responsibilities for oversight and enforcement, Bahrain is working towards responsible development and deployment of AI, while fostering investment and innovation in the sector.

Al Shahabi believes that Bahrain is well-positioned to leverage AI for significant advancements across various sectors, including finance, banking, logistics, transportation, healthcare, cybersecurity, tourism, and government services. With a proactive approach to regulating AI, Bahrain is paving the way for other countries to follow suit, creating a favorable environment for developers, companies, and investors while prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens and residents.
