The 56th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting is currently underway in Davos, Switzerland, from January 19th to 23rd, 2026, and is proving to be a pivotal moment for global cooperation in the face of unprecedented challenges. With a record attendance of nearly 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries, the forum, themed “A Spirit of Dialogue,” is focused on navigating a complex world marked by economic shifts, rapid technological advancements, and escalating geopolitical tensions. This year’s gathering includes a significant presence from Bahrain, underscoring the nation’s commitment to international partnerships and its proactive role in shaping the future global landscape.

Bahrain at the Forefront of Global Discussions at WEF 2026

His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Court, is leading a high-level Bahraini delegation on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This delegation signifies Bahrain’s dedication to actively participating in and contributing to the critical conversations happening at WEF 2026.

The Bahraini representation includes key figures driving the nation’s economic and development agenda:

  • His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy and Chairman of Mumtalakat Holding Company
  • Her Excellency Noor bint Ali Al Khalif, Minister of Sustainable Development and CEO of the Bahrain Economic Development Board
  • His Excellency Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce.

Alongside these ministers, a cohort of other vital officials from both government and the economic sector are present, ensuring a comprehensive and informed Bahraini voice in the discussions.

Strengthening Regional Ties: Bahrain and the UAE

A key highlight of the forum so far has been the engagement between Bahraini and Emirati leaders. His Highness Shaikh Isa paid a visit to the United Arab Emirates Pavilion, where he met with Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

These meetings weren’t merely ceremonial. Discussions centered on bolstering the already strong relationship between Bahrain and the UAE, specifically focusing on expanding economic partnerships. Leaders explored opportunities for increased collaboration in areas like sustainable development, innovative governance models, and the crucial exchange of best practices. This commitment to regional synergy demonstrates a unified approach to tackling shared challenges and capitalizing on mutual strengths.

Navigating a World of Uncertainty: Key Themes at WEF 2026

WEF 2026 is taking place at a particularly sensitive juncture in global affairs. The world is grappling with a confluence of issues, from ongoing geopolitical conflicts to the transformative power – and potential risks – of artificial intelligence. The forum’s agenda reflects this complexity, with sessions dedicated to fostering international norms and addressing emerging threats.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s warning about a potential drift away from shared rules and established international norms resonated throughout the opening days. This sentiment underscores the urgency of the discussions and the need for renewed commitment to multilateralism.

Other prominent themes include:

  • Responsible AI Development: Exploring how to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while mitigating its potential negative impacts on society and the economy.
  • Trade Policy and Global Supply Chains: Addressing current trade disputes and working towards more resilient and equitable global supply chains.
  • Climate Resilience and Sustainable Solutions: Accelerating the transition to a sustainable future and building resilience against the impacts of climate change.

The forum isn’t shying away from difficult conversations. Political tensions are openly discussed, providing a platform for candid debate alongside the pursuit of collaborative solutions.

The Role of Davos in a Changing World

The sheer scale of WEF 2026 – nearly 3,000 participants, including around 400 senior political figures, 65 heads of state and government, and 850 CEOs – highlights its continued relevance as a central hub for global leadership. The livestreaming of over 200 sessions ensures that the insights and discussions are accessible to a wider audience.

However, the forum also faces scrutiny. Critics question the effectiveness of such gatherings in translating dialogue into concrete action. Nevertheless, WEF 2026 provides a crucial space for leaders to connect, share perspectives, and identify common ground. The emphasis on a “Spirit of Dialogue” is a deliberate attempt to foster understanding and build trust in a world increasingly characterized by division.

Looking Ahead: The Importance of Continued Dialogue

WEF 2026 is far more than just a conference; it’s a microcosm of the challenges and opportunities facing the world today. The participation of Bahrain, and the focus on strengthening regional ties with the UAE, demonstrates the nation’s commitment to proactive engagement in shaping a more stable and prosperous future. The discussions surrounding global economic outlook, responsible technology, and climate action are vital for navigating the complexities of the 21st century.

As the forum concludes, the true measure of its success will lie in the extent to which the spirit of dialogue translates into tangible progress on these critical issues. The need for continued collaboration and a renewed commitment to international cooperation has never been greater.
